55 bird species in danger of being wiped out of Panama

At least 55 species of birds are in danger of extinction in Panama, with five of them in critical condition, according to a report by environmental agency Anam.

Officials said the reason the species are being threatened is due to the destruction of their habitat.

Among the birds at risk of disappearing are several types of macaws and Harpy Eagles.

In the report, biologist Eric Núñez said other factors threatening these species are illegal trafficking and the loss of forest areas to agricultural development.

Macaws are the target of bird traffickers because of their intelligence and colorful plumage, according to Núñez.
