Australian GHG Emissions Up 0.5% In 2010
(Reuters) - Australia's greenhouse gas emissions grew 0.5 percent in the year to December 2010 to 543 million tonnes, matching a long-term pattern of growth, government estimates showed on Monday.

Following is a snapshot of the estimates released by the government on Monday. The 2010 figures do not include emissions from land use change, such as deforestation. The government also released data for the 2009 calendar year, the latest fully audited numbers as part of mandatory reporting to the United Nations.

The data comes as the government struggles to win agreement on how to price carbon emissions that are the highest per-capita among developed nations.

-- Emissions for calendar 2010 grew largely because of the recovery in industrial activity from low levels during the economic slowdown in 2009. Emissions from stationary energy other than electricity grew 5.4 percent, while electricity dropped 2.7 percent.

-- Emissions fell by 1.2 percent in Q4 2010. Decreases in black coal-fired power generation were partially offset by increases in gas and hydro generation.
