Floods Spread Through Alpine, Balkan Nations - 42 Reported Dead So Far

Efforts are continuing across Europe to help thousands of civilians affected by devastating floods which have killed at least 42 people.
In the Swiss capital Bern helicopters have been used to pluck people from rooftops and residents are braced for more rescues amid rising water levels. Elsewhere in Europe, people face a massive clean-up task as they return to flood-damaged homes.

Forecasters warn there is still rain ahead, but it has eased in many places. BBC weather expert John Hammond predicts "more rain at the end of the week, but nothing on the scale of what we have seen."

At least 11 people are also reported dead or missing in Switzerland, Austria and Germany, where the authorities are struggling to restore basic services.

The first German casualty of the floods died on the River Mangfall in Bavaria. The 28-year-old was swept into the water when his rubber dinghy capsized. Although flood waters have started to recede in parts of Germany, the level of the Danube is not expected to peak until later on Thursday.
