Kan vows to stick to guns on 25% emissions cut
Kyodo

The nation will stick to its goal of slashing greenhouse gas emissions 25 percent by 2020 from 1990 levels through the promotion of renewable energy and conservation, Prime Minister Naoto Kan said Wednesday.

His remarks during the Upper House plenary session comes as the country attempts to revamp its energy policy to become less dependent on nuclear power as the quake-and-tsunami-triggered crisis at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant continues.

Japan set the ambitious reduction target in September 2009 under a pledge by then-Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama.
