Scientists from the United States, Spain, and Japan are joining together to conduct the first international, multidisciplinary assessment of the radioactive contamination in the Pacific Ocean from Japan’s worst nuclear crisis in history.
The shipboard research team, which began its work on June 4, will collect water and biological samples and take ocean current measurements offshore of the earthquake and tsunami-crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, the centerpiece of the nuclear disaster.
“This project will address fundamental questions about the impact of this release of radiation to the ocean, and in the process enhance international collaboration and sharing of scientific data,” Vicki Chandler, chief program officer of science at the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, said in a statement.
The team said that its work will build on the research already done by Japanese scientists and will lay a foundation for further international collaboration and long-term research of releases from the Fukushima plant.
