While the Wallow fire continues to burn, residents of northeastern Arizona are being urged to purchase something they may not expect - federal flood insurance.
The wildfire has consumed more than 450,000 acres of forest so far and has reduced the ability of the forest floor to absorb and drain the water dropped by Arizona monsoons. The more unstable forest floor can cause water to collect downstream with a higher velocity, creating urban and flash flooding.
While it may seem odd to offer flood insurance while the Wallow fire is only 10 percent contained, the federal government said this is a good time for residents to purchase insurance through the FEMA-sponsored National Flood Insurance Program as it takes 30 days for the coverage to come into effect.
