It's warming up: Sydney has mildest winter ever
Sydney has experienced its warmest winter, with a record number of days above 20 degrees.

The weather bureau says Sydney's average winter daytime maximum was 19.4 this year - the highest since records began in 1859.

The overall daily temperature - calculated by averaging temperatures over a 24 hour period - also reached a record high of 14.5, equalling 1998's winter records.

The record temperatures follow consistently warmer winter weather in recent years, a bureau spokesman said.

Last year's average winter daytime maximum temperature of 19.2 was the second highest recorded.

The high temperature average was due to the consistently mild to warm days with a record 36 days exceeding 20 degrees, he said.

"What we've been getting is consistently mild to warm temperatures around 20 degrees all the time," he said.

The rest of NSW also experienced higher than average winter temperatures, with the mercury registering between one and three degrees above average from May to July.
