Daiichi Contaminated Water Containment?
Edited on Tue Jun-21-11 02:42 PM by SpoonFed
So, it's about that time, the 21st of June when estimates that the make shift water containment system at Daiichi would start to overflow if not dealt with in some way. Does anyone have any information on this (yet)? I'm assuming that the (potential) overflow of the makeshift water containment they created is about to start, since the filtration attempt seems to have been a failture...

1. Recent reports indicate that there's about a week to go before overflow

and that they're cutting back on the amount of water they pump in to stretch that out.

Where did you read that? Last I read they were in the last couple days of testing before full operation.

2. Follow the story at JAIF

The earthquake reports. Quick summary - they started filtering last Friday. Had to shut down in just under five hours. A filter that was supposed to last a month had already exceeded contamination limits.

First they thought it was oil and sludge. Now they are just saying that the water was more contaminated than expected. They are trying different combos of filter compounds and slowing the filter rate.

They tried again a couple of days ago and a pump fouled, so they are trying again now.

It sure looks like their expected capacity of 1,200 tons of water a day is a great overestimate.

Edit: there's a thread on this forum about it, but I can't find it. Here's kind of a summary article:

Every time they prove yet again that anything they say is off by a factor of 10 to 100. If it's stating some ability or capacity they overstate the situation by 100 times if it's consequences and costs, it's understated by 100x. I mean, seriously. Can somebody cut the head off this organization already and do something about this nightmarish contraption and poor excuse for a nuclear power plant and it's operators?

4. From the NHK broadcast
Yesterday after the second shutdown (first because radiation filter maxed out, second was overloaded pump) TEPCO said they thought it would be running within 2-3 days. Today, they gave up that timing and said it isn't known when they will have it up and running. By diverting water to a few other buildings on site they think they have enough space for 5-6 days more storage IF they reduce the input flow and allow more heating to occur.

5. So
They plan on squeezing the safety margins? Less water= more heat in melted core.

Gee, what could possibly go wrong?

7. They may have found and fixed the problem
http://www3.nhk.or.jp/daily/english/23_21.html
The utility discovered on Wednesday that a US-made device in the system only succeeded in lowering the concentration of radioactive cesium in the water to 1 percent of the previous amount, instead of to 0.1 percent as initially expected.

Contaminated water was supposed to pass through 3 absorbent chambers. But it was found that some water passed through only one chamber, because "open" and "shut" indications on a valve had been incorrect.

Yesterday they had said that there was a sharp rise in the temperatures in reactor 3 after water flow was cut, so that solution wasn't going to last long.

This is back in another round of testing.
