St. Louis Enjoying Green Building Boom - Post-Dispatch
EDIT

Over the last year at least five buildings in the St. Louis area have been certified under LEED, bringing the total to nine, said Emily Andrews, coordinator with the St. Louis regional chapter of U.S. Green Building Council

"It is indicative of the (increasing) interest in green buildings," she said. "People are more aware of the importance of a better working environment."

In the St. Louis area, 17 projects are registered with the council, meaning they are seeking the certification, and 45 others are in the design stage, said Paul Todd Merrill, senior project engineer at Clayco, an Overland-based builder. This activity makes the St. Louis area the Midwest leader in green projects, he said.

Last year, the headquarters of Overland-based builder Alberici Group won platinum LEED certification, the highest standard. Only nine newly constructed buildings in the world have achieved that rating.
