Energy efficient sales tax holiday begins in Florida

Gov. Jeb Bush encouraged participation in Florida's inaugural sales tax holiday for energy efficient products, which began Thursday and ends Oct. 11.

The sales tax holiday is a component of the 2006 Florida Energy Act that coincides with state-mandated Energy Efficient Week. Floridians can purchase energy efficient appliances and products for up to $1,500 free of sales tax.

"Through diversity and conservation, we can reduce our dependence on imported oil, spur economic growth and ensure that a balanced mix of fuel sources and technologies are readily available for years to come," Bush said in a prepared statement.

Qualifying energy efficient products include a dishwasher, clothes washer, air conditioner, ceiling fan, incandescent or fluorescent light bulb, dehumidifier, programmable thermostat, or refrigerator that meets all requirements of the "Energy Star" program.
