http://www.letsrecycle.com/legislation/news.jsp?story=6196Former World Bank chief economist Sir Nicholas Stern today laid out the findings of his government-commissioned review into the economics of climate change.
Waste materials like wood can be used as biomass fuels for generating energy, such as at this plant on Teeside
Although the issue of waste featured only briefly in a review dominated by the need to change the way energy is generated and used, the possibilities for waste materials to be recycled and recovered to generate energy were highlighted.
The review stated that waste is currently responsible for emitting 1.4 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide-equivalent climate change-causing emissions, half of which comes from landfill sites.

It said half of these emissions could be cut by 2020 "at relatively low cost". Three-quarters of these emission cuts could be achieved "at negative cost", with the remaining quarter at a cost of $5 per tonne of CO2-equivalent emissions.
