TOKYO (AFP) - Last month was the world's hottest January on record, in further evidence that greenhouse gas emissions are causing global warming, Japanese scientists said.

Temperatures across the planet were 0.45 degrees Celsius above average in January, the highest since figures were first compiled in 1891, the Japan Meteorological Agency said Friday.

It said that temperatures were particularly high in eastern Russia and northern Europe.

"Reasons behind the high temperatures are considered to be the impact of global warming due to an increase in carbon dioxide, along with El Nino and the cyclical natural movement in temperatures," an agency statement said.

1. I can see that. I looks like an early spring is coming for the west....most of the snow as melted in

the last couple of days. January and December were really bad, though...even for here. There was 2 feet of snow on the ground and the temperture was around -25 at night and -5 during the day. Now, its been making attempts at 50 and rarely gets below freezing. Its Febuary 9, 2007 and spring has already come for Wyoming and Colorado.
