PepsiCo Now at Top of U.S. REC Purchasers (1 billion kWh, 100% electricity offset)
http://www.renewableenergyaccess.com/rea/news/story?id=48326

PepsiCo today announced a three-year purchase of renewable energy certificates (RECs) that are comprised of more than 1 billion kilowatt-hours annually, to offset 100% of purchased electricity used by all PepsiCo U.S. facilities. With this purchase PepsiCo now tops EPA's list of top-25 green power purchasers.

"Energy is a key focus for PepsiCo within its environmental sustainability agenda," said John Compton, chief executive officer, PepsiCo North America. "The purchase of these RECs is not only in line with our progress to date, but further advances our commitment to sustainability and helps make a positive impact in the communities we serve across the country."

PepsiCo, which is partnering with Sterling Planet on the purchase of the RECs, formed its Environmental Task Force in 2001. Its divisions, already involved in and recognized for their environmental initiatives include Frito-Lay and Gatorade, which operate two LEED GOLD-certified facilities. Earlier this year PepsiCo was recognized as ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year for outstanding energy management and reductions in greenhouse gas emissions. PepsiCo's Frito-Lay North America division received the award in 2006.

"This approach should help the local communities where PepsiCo has a presence to grow local renewable energy sources," said Mel Jones, president and chief executive officer, Sterling Planet.

edit: REC are not the same as carbon credits. Renewable electicity producers receive one REC for every 1000 kWh of electricity they produce. REC are a market based mechanism to support the development of renewable energy systems - it is not a "scam".
