Visionary Leadership From TX Legislature - Plan Would Cut Gas Tax 20 Cents
Gas prices are climbing, but the Texas House wants to make your summer road trip a little cheaper.

House members gave a preliminary blessing Tuesday to a three-month break from the 20-cent-per-gallon state gas tax, aiming to ease the pain during the summer driving season.

Gas prices have been creeping higher for 13 straight weeks, according to AAA Texas surveys. Last week, prices for regular-grade gasoline rose to $2.87 a gallon in Texas, with Dallas drivers paying a penny more per gallon.

Rep. Trey Martinez Fischer, D-San Antonio, tacked the surprise measure onto a Senate gas tax collection bill Tuesday. He said a couple driving a pickup and a car could save more than $100 over the three months. "It's real relief," Mr. Martinez Fischer said. "It makes a difference, I believe, in whether or not families will spend that weekend going to the coast or Fiesta Texas or Six Flags."

1. Yes, relief. Relief from those awful, awful *taxes*.
That family will be able to gas up their F150, but they won't have a road to drive it on. Or police, or fire protection, or schools....

But hey, those *taxes*. What a *relief*.

2. So the oil companies will jack it 30 cents
I can't even afford to visit friends 30 miles away, much less spend the money Fiesta Texas or Six flags takes on top of the gas.

3. We are so totally doomed.
As a nation we have grasped onto irrational selfishness, superstition, petty xenophobic nationalism, fear-induced lobotomized militarism, and painless cheap solutions to all that ails us. We are a nation of morons and we are all riding on the Neoclown Express Bus right off the freaking cliff.

At some point all of our fancy heavy weapon military hardware is going to be just sitting there stranded 5,000 miles from home with no fuel to run it, and the hungry angry and no longer submissive planetary underclass is going to do to us and our sorry-ass empire what the germanic tribes did to rome.
