Main Algerian political party quits coalition
Algeria's largest political party has withdrawn from the coalition government, saying it could not support a president who quashed political parties and state institutions to get himself re-elected next year.

The move came a day after the National Liberation Front (FLN) said it would defy a ban to hold a congress on Saturday and select party secretary-general Ali Benflis as its presidential candidate in the 2004 elections.

"The National Liberation Front party considers its presence in the coalition government no longer justified... therefore it decides to withdraw the party's minsters from the current government," the FLN executive said in a statement.

Thursday's move was likely to further plunge the oil-rich Muslim country into political turmoil.
