PRC seizes 105 tons of rat poison

Chinese authorities have seized 105 tons of a banned type of rat poison in a crackdown on the chemical, which has been used in a series of fatal attacks, the government said yesterday.

Authorities also closed three major sales centers that were illegally distributing the poison, known as Dushuqiang, the official Xinhua News Agency reported.

Scores of people have been killed with Dushuqiang over the past year in attacks blamed on feuds or business disputes. Last year, at least 38 schoolchildren and others died in the eastern city of Nanjing after eating snacks laced with the poison.

Dushuqiang has been banned since the mid-1990s as too toxic for general use, but it's widely produced and sold in the countryside.
