Zim's army commander to call it a day
Harare - Zimbabwe's army commander, one of President Robert Mugabe's key men, is due to retire at the end of the year after nearly a decade in office, army and government officials said on Tuesday.

General Vitalis Zvinavashe, an independence war hero popularly known by his guerrilla name "Fox-Gava", was appointed head of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF) in 1994, and was for years also a member of the politburo of Mugabe's ruling Zanu-PF party, its powerful inner-cabinet.

On Tuesday, one government and Zanu-PF official said the 60-year-old general, for whom Mugabe hosted a farewell party at his residence on Monday, had not spelt out his plans but had indicated that he was "available for any state and party duties."

A little info about the 'General' in lower GNP countries. The General is actually the person who controls the country, makes the bribe/foreign contract money. He isn't bothered with public appearances. That's the job for the 'fool', the Democraticly elected President.
