Academics address alcoholism in Aboriginal tribes - TW
Aborigines should not be equated with alcoholism, and the problems of drinking in the tribes should be treated as a social, not health, problem

STAFF REPORTER

"Getting rid of alcoholism is easy -- the treatment only takes about one to two weeks. Maintaining sobriety afterwards is the difficult part."

Cheng Tai-an, a Academia Sinica researcher
Alcoholism among Aborigines should be treated as a social, rather than medical, problem with an emphasis on keeping people off alcohol once they have completed rehabilitation, academics said yesterday.

Associate professor Wang Tseng-yung (王增勇) said that the incidence of alcoholism in the nation's Aboriginal population was a reflection of the pressures their cultures were being put under by the dominant Han culture.

He said it was Aboriginal teachers and civil servants, who had most interaction with other cultures and were bestowed with the greatest expectations of their tribes, who were most likely to resort to drinking to relieve the stress.

Has any personally seen this? In any country any tribe or culture group? I been with these people in Taiwan as it's really scary! Lucky there are no guns in Taiwan! The abuse is incredible. I don't know if they're coming next to me to kill me or kiss me. It's like a switch and you never know. These are some of the people who also sold their children to the KMT Government Mafia to be used as children sex slaves and street prostitutes. I can't understand why current President Chen doesn't extradite them back to China?

What they say of themselves: (like the RNC website)
