Japan defector said to be mole
In another strange twist to an already odd saga, a Japanese woman who recently defected to North Korea was a government mole in the doomsday cult accused of a nerve gas attack on Tokyo's subway in 1995, reports and a cult spokesman said yesterday.

Kazumi Kitagawa jumped off a ferry and swam across a river between China and North Korea to seek asylum in the isolated communist nation. With most asylum seekers trying to get out of North Korea, Kitagawa's effort to live the North was treated as front-page news here when it came to light last week.

A few days later, the plot took another turn when a cult spokesman said Kitagawa had been a member. Yesterday, media reported yet more: Kitagawa, 29, had in fact been a mole for the Public Safety Agency, leaking information on its activities for four years.

The Public Safety Agency, in charge of domestic security issues akin to the FBI, refused to comment.
