Forces arrest politician - Mauritania
Nouakchott - Mauritanian armed security forces have arrested the country's losing challenger from presidential elections, taking him away after a stakeout at his campaign headquarters.

A spokesperson says police entered campaign headquarters as opposition leader Mohamed Ould Khouna Haidalla and others were carrying out morning prayers.

Haidalla is a former military dictator who had tried to win back power at the polls last week, 19 years after President Maaoya Sid'Ahmed overthrew him in a coup.

The Interior Ministry on Saturday declared Taya the winner of the presidential vote, with 67%. Taya, the strongest of five challengers, received 19%, the Interior Ministry said.

Haidalla and other opposition leaders rejected the outcome, saying it was based on fraud and intimidation.
