300 cars stolen in South Africa every day
The shocking extent of vehicle theft has been revealed - about 111 000 vehicles are stolen and hijacked annually in South Africa - more than 300 daily - and an estimated 20 000 of these are illegally exported into neighbouring countries.

Forty percent of the stolen and hijacked vehicles were recovered by the police and tracker firms. The rest - about 66 600 cars annually - are re-registered, cut up for spare parts, or illegally exported.

According to police figures, 14 691 carjackings were reported between April last year and March this year. Most of these - 9 371 - took place in Gauteng.
