The Papua New Guinea government may be set for a showdown with Rupert Murdoch and Kerry Packer after announcing it was considering an extraordinary overhaul of media ownership laws.
Deputy Prime Minister Andrew Baing said he was considering passing a law to force PNG's mostly foreign-owned media to sell their controlling interests to become 51 per cent owned by PNG shareholders.
Baing announced the proposal on Friday during his speech to a 400-head celebratory dinner for Malaysian-owned PNG newspaper The National.
The statement sent shockwaves through the audience of business and media chiefs, which included representatives of Rupert Murdoch's News Corp and Kerry Packer's Publishing and Broadcasting Ltd.
