Pro-Beijing party calls for directly elected legislature - HK
In an apparent shift ahead of local elections, a leading pro-Beijing party said yesterday it desires a directly elected successor to Hong Kong's current leader, Tung Chee-hwa, who was hand-picked by China to run the former British colony.

Chairman Tsang Yok-sing of the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment of Hong Kong said his party supports a popular election for the chief executive post in 2007, when Tung's term expires, the South China Morning Post reported.

Fellow DAB member and legislator Chan Kam-lam confirmed the party's position to The Associated Press on yesterday, adding that it also wants a democratically elected Legislative Council in 2008.
