The scheduled October delivery of the first batch of U.S.-made AIM-120 advanced medium range air-to-air missiles has been postponed for an undetermined period of time, Air Force Commander-in-Chief Lee Tien-yu said yesterday.
No reason was given for the delay, but the local Chinese-language daily China Times reported yesterday that the United States had delayed delivery of the missiles until after the March 2004 presidential election in consideration of the currently sensitive nature of cross-strait relations.
Because of the postponement, the air force has begun negotiating with U.S. authorities for compensation, Lee said. But the delay was not expected to hurt the air force's manpower training programs, a military source speaking on condition of anonymity said yesterday.
