'Pay rebels to leave' - Uganda

Kampala, Nairobi - A Ugandan peace team has a new strategy for ending the country's 17-year civil war: Give a bundle of money and a ticket out of the country to any rebel who surrenders, local media reported on Tuesday.

"It's a step in the right direction," said a member of Uganda's parliament in Kampala's New Vision newspaper.

The peace team's co-ordinator claims that several countries have expressed their willingness to accept the demobilised rebels.

But many doubt whether the rebels will accept the government's offer.

Joseph Kony, leader of the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) rebels, has vowed to overthrow Uganda's government and replace it with one based on the biblical Ten Commandments.
