Border policeman's body returned to Germany from Iraq

BERLIN - The body of one of two German embassy guards killed in an ambush last month near the Iraqi city of Fallujah was returned to Germany on Sunday, the Interior Ministry in Berlin said.

The two were members of the elite GSG-9 unit of the German Federal Border Guard, a police force whose tasks include guarding German embassies abroad. They were driving from Amman to Baghdad with an armoured diplomatic car and supplies when they were attacked.

Germany has withheld details about the killings until an inquiry is completed by the police and federal prosecutors. The Foreign Office declined to say where the body was found.

Spokesman Walter Lindner said the embassy was still trying to establish what had become of the other guard, and would not explain how it identified the

first body so as not to endanger those efforts.
