Dozens killed in rebel attack outside Kampala
By Daniel Wallis

Kampala - Rebels from the shadowy Lord's Resistance Army killed 25 people, including eight children, in an attack on villagers in northern Uganda, an army spokesperson said on Friday.

Government troops have fought the brutal, cult-like LRA for 18 years in remote northern areas of the East African country. About 1.5 million people have fled their homes to escape the fighting.

"A Ugandan army unit clashed with a group of rebels yesterday evening north of Gulu town," army spokesperson Major Shaban Bantariza said, adding that troops killed five LRA fighters.
