Spain changes law on genital mutilation

Madrid - Spain is to modify legislation to enable the judiciary to penalise immigrants for female genital mutilation (FGM) operations performed in their home countries, press reports said on Wednesday.

Parliament agreed unanimously on Tuesday to make FGM an extra-territorial crime like genocide, terrorism or child abuse.

"We do not want to stigmatise any culture, but girls have the right to free themselves from this practice," said Catalan MP Mercedes Pigem, adding that FGM was not required by any religion.

1. Spain...be proud...be very proud

female circumcision is utterly repulsive. I read an article about the disgusting practice a few years ago and was dismayed and really angered in equal measure.

I have no quibble with respecting cultural differences but that sick practice is intolerable because it is an affront to human dignity. If anyone thinks my outrage is wrong think about this...would an adult female willingly subject herself to such horror? Rhetorical question, isn't it?

Sorry for the rant. Certain things just flip the switch and, for me, that's one of them.

2. FGM is not just circumcision.. the Clitoris is REMOVED. !!! then their

Labia Minor is abraded then sewn together to create an adhesion with a small opening left to accommodate their period. the Clitoris is amputated... this is often dont in filthy conditions with old rusty razor blades and about 1 in 8 die. this is done at a young age...the husband then cavorts with prostitutes and mistresses until he decides he wants to impregnate her..the adhesion is cut open and then the process is repeated after the birth to prevent the woman from..straying.

i am sure that there are variations of the theme.. but removing the clitoris is to prevent her from wanting to have affairs, the adhesion is to prevent it.

this is more than barbaric.

that if they waited until the woman reached adulthood would a woman want it to happen? Poor syntax/grammar on my part.

FGM is simply barbaric and serves no purpose other than to put women down.
