Philippines Deploys Troops as Coup Rumors Fly
Here we go again.

MANILA (Reuters) - Hundreds of Philippine
police and soldiers guarded a Roman Catholic
shrine in Manila on Wednesday in case of
large-scale anti-government rallies, just weeks after
authorities put down an armed rebellion by renegade soldiers.

Security officials said the deployment at the EDSA shrine, the
focus of "people power" revolts that ousted dictator Ferdinand
Marcos in 1986 and Joseph Estrada from the presidency in
2001, had begun Tuesday night.

"There are relentless rumors of another coup attempt,"
Defense Secretary Angelo Reyes told reporters.

He said the deployment was a precautionary measure.
