1. I think this is a good idea
I don't have a problem with this. What do you mean "out on a limb?" You mean by proposing ANY kind of gun legislation? Goes to show you, even a stopped clock is right twice a day.

3. I just find a legislative proposal like this one
immediately after an incident like happened in Atlanta 'knee-jerk'.

It's not like there aren't already laws against grabbing a cops gun.

FWIW- if this were Canada they would be proposing a law to assess penalties against the cop who had his gun stolen.

4. Oh, it's knee-jerk without question
Doesn't necessarily make it wrong. Obviously I'm not fully educated on the matter, but on the surface, I don't see anything wrong about it.

Once again for other readers:

See how enforcement of what's on the books works before writing any more legislation. Enforcement has been a joke thus far.

Also, I sincerely doubt that the punishment from such a law would be any more than a drop in a cloudburst. Off the top of my head, having worked in corrections, you'd have theft (or attempted), assault, assaulting an officer (in addition to vanilla assault), assault with intent, assault with a deadly weapon, (in addition to the other 2 assault charges) endangerment, felony escape (or attempted), murder or attempted murder if you fired the gun, brandishing a weapon, possibly possession of a firearm by a convicted felon( if it's not the crook's first time around and before the ruling) and a ton of other crimes. Also, let's add the possible Federal charges for illegally obtaining a firearm and a possible myriad of other Federal charges relating to firearms possession and/or use by a prohibited person. I know the escape charges alone get you a flat 10 years in KY. Ass them al up and the perpetrator could well be looking at over 100 years - and the judge has the option to make the terms consecutive. Of course, a death, even from a heart attack because of the stress of the situttion, can carry the death penalty in this state. A death during the commission of a felony can be tried as 1st degree murder here.

FDR -- he was Democrat, right? -- would be rolling back and forth in his grave to hear the way some Democrats talk these days.

Since the beginning of our American history, we have been engaged in change -- in a perpetual peaceful revolution -- a revolution which goes on steadily, quietly adjusting itself to changing conditions -- without the concentration camp or the quick-lime in the ditch. The world order which we seek is the cooperation of free countries, working together in a friendly, civilized society.
He'd be hard put to find much in the way of friendly or civilized hereabouts.

And hey, it isn't Canada where somebody is trying to penalize cops for saving somebody's life, is it?

5. Well the Brady Campaign always says you are more likely to die from..,.
your own gun than use it against someone else, and this just proves it. I hope they press for sensible, or common sense, gun legislation to remove firearms from all police officers in order to save their lives.

9. Pre-emptive move?

According to the Brady Campaign, the LEAA is in cahoots with the NRA.

http://www.bradycenter.org/ler/leg/leaa.php

True or not, the proposed legislation (stupid as it is), is probably being put forth as an alternative to the inevitable knee-jerk reaction of the "Smart Gun" technology supporters (even stupider).

Funny thing about that... even though "Smart Guns" were originally conceptualized with LEOs in mind, cops are very much opposed to the idea.

The NJ "Smart Gun" law exempts police from the technology.

15. Gee, THAT would have stopped the guy in Atlanta
He might have still had a chance to grap an officer's gun, but surely he's a sensible guy and wouldn't want to get in TROUBLE.
