Poll question: How many gun owners do you know? |
|
Please answer both in the thread and in the poll. I am curious if a theory of mine holds up. Since I don't wish to bias the results I won't state the theory but I do need an answer in the thread to see if my theory holds water.

Including family. I think some of them are beginning to see the error of their ways, though.

my ex girlfriend had 'em (she was from shoot-em-up arizona), my present girlfriend has 'em (she's a farmer, so she's always shooting at something or the other to protect her animals), plus I know a gun nut. other folks might have guns that I'm unaware of

I happen to live in one of the most armed states in the nation. Also with a low crime rate ...
I have weapons ranging from a flintlock to a high powered deer rifle. No handguns though!

I somehow doubt your theory will be tested properly, whatever that theory is.
You really should have an answer for 'I don't know'. I couldn't reply, since I have no idea how many people I know own guns. I have never done a survey. ;-)

I feel like Mike Malloy on the subject of handguns though "I hate guns but, I know why I need them". I own a shotgun, a rifle and a four wheel drive so this country boy liberal will survive:)

Lemme tell you about the gun owners I know.
Person number 1 is my grandfather who comes from a somewhat rural area, he used to hunt but doesnt anymore, votes democratic no matter what, and isnt afraid the democrats are gonna take his guns, and hes no fan of the NRA.
Person number 2 is a father of a friend, their family was democratic back in the day, but with the Roe V Wade decision they got conservative, guns may have helped too a little, he is in the NRA, and will be voting for Bush no matter what, even if the democrats did change their views on guns.
Its kinda funny really that the same people who have called me idealistic and yes I wear that badge with pride for supporting DK expect to change the party's views on guns at the drop of a hat, no offense guys but I am no fan of guns for personal reasons.

More people own guns than you think. I am always surprised by the people who get permits and usually more than one. They publish permit applicants in the paper periodically.

10. Whatever your theory is, you can't test it with a poll like this because |
|
you can't (a) describe the population from which you sample, (b) the population has several strata, and (c) the sample is almost certainly not going to be random.

One already has a CCW permit, and I don't know about the other, because neither one is obsessed with guns to the point that they can talk about nothing else, and the topic rarely comes up. We have many other non-business things to talk about.

by guns. The number would be very high.

considering that I don't start friendships with people I think are not in control of their mental facilities, I'd have to say that I have no problem with the people I know having guns.

25. It's not how many are friends, it's how many do you know |
|
I have lots of friends...and the only one who has a gun has it because I gave it to him as a joke...
I've known lots of nimnoms who had guns, on the other hand, and yet to meet one that I didn't think was a danger to himself and others.

And if a person isn't a friend, I don't associate with them. It makes my life simpler. why would I want to know an asshole?

16. Everybody I know personally... |
|
except for my sister. Even most of the kids I know have their own guns, although their parents tend to lock them up for them if they're young. When my best friend's daughter was born, I gave them a very nice .22 rifle for her as a christening present. They were thrilled, and now that she's over 5, she's shot it while sitting on Mommy's lap.

20. Hardly anyone, but I don't really have a number |
|
Most of the people I know who have guns are cops. I'm not sure if they count. Our neighbor has some kind of rifle. I've known a few hunters over the years, but can't think of anyone I know who hunts now. I'm sure a lot of people around here have some kind of gun, but not too many of the people I actually know.

He used to get drunk and fire it occasionally. And the neighbor on the other side is a cop. No one that I work with or hang out with or any family members either hunt or have a gun for any other purpose, though.

In Norwood, homes without firearms are probably in the minority, so I would have to place the number of gun owners I know personally in the hundreds. I get over 20 just counting family members.
As an aside, I've been openly carrying lately in support of the concealed carry movement in Ohio, and, ironically, I've been somewhat disappointed at the complete and total lack of a response in Norwood. No one even seems to give a second look.
