I'm not kidding. Here's the link:
http://www.freep.com/news/latestnews/pm17000_20031103.htm(Former) Detroit Police Chief Jerry Oliver was busted on October 18 when he failed to declare his .25 caliber handgun while boarding a plane at Detroit's Metro Airport. The gun was loaded (another violation), and it was in his checked baggage (NOT his carry on baggage). He did not try to take the gun through the security check point and into the terminal.
Today, Wayne County prosecutor declared his intention to press misdemeanor charges against the Chief, who resigned last Friday when informed of the impending charges.
While the baggage was being screened, airport security found the gun in the Chief's baggage. Since the gun had not been declared, they ran a check on the serial number and found that the gun was not registered in Michigan. That's another violation.
Further investigation found that the Chief wasn't even eligible to carry a concealed weapon. He had failed to file the proper papers to become a sworn Police Officer in the state of Michigan. Without that, or a private CCW permit, the Chief was not allowed to carry a concealed weapon, and thus the charges were filed.
Ironically, Chief Oliver was hired to reform the Detroit Police Department. Part of his reform program was to press for termination of street officers who had been charged with crimes, even misdemeanors.
Prosecutor Duggan says it is his duty to treat the Chief as he would any other criminal.
NRA officials are said to be torn between their feigned insistence that all existing gun crimes should be enforced, and the knowledge that there is now one less cop on the streets to enforce gun laws that apply to their membership.
