GUNS IN THE NEWS--November 5, 2003
As CO Liberal sez:
Please try to adhere to the following guidelines:
1 - Feel free to add any CURRENT stories to this thread by replying to this message. In order to be considered current, stories should have been originally posted to the 'Net within the past 24 hours, or provide follow-up to a story that was previously posted on the J/PS board. (On Mondays, stories that were originally posted to the 'Net over the weekend - Friday night through Sunday - are considered current. This allows for the fact than many people are off-line over the weekend, allowing the Monday thread to be a weekend summary.)
2 - Both pro-gun and anti-gun stories are welcome in this thread, as well as gun-related editorials, as long as they're current. Please do not post links from a few years back that support your position.
3 - Do not change story titles. In other words, if the Oskosh Gazette's web site runs a story titled "Two Killed in Holdup", the title of your message should read "Two Killed in Holdup". Don't change it to "Gun Owner Kills Two People", or anything else that changes the meaning of the story.
4 - If it's not clear from the title where the story occurred, add the city, state, or country in parentheses after the title.
5 - Comment on a story by replying to that story.

1. Undercover DEA Agent Shot in Drug Deal (PA)
"PHILADELPHIA - A federal agent was shot during an undercover drug deal Tuesday afternoon, and the suspect apparently killed himself after fleeing beneath a pier where the deal went down, police said.
The Drug Enforcement Administration agent, William Hocker, 51, was reported in stable condition at a hospital with shoulder and face wounds, said Normadene Murphy, an agency spokeswoman.
"They were going to buy some drugs from him," Police Commissioner Sylvester Johnson said. "The person pulled a gun out and shot the DEA agent." "

3. Two shot dead in Washington County bar (PA)
"A convicted drug dealer awaiting a court-ordered payment of more than $65,000 from the Washington County district attorney was found dead yesterday along with another man inside a North Strabane tavern.
County Coroner S. Timothy Warco said Fred Brilla, 50, of Canonsburg, died of a gunshot to the head. Martin J. Brahler, 40, a bartender from Peters, also was found shot dead, also in the head.
The U.S. Supreme Court in September refused to hear District Attorney John C. Pettit's arguments against paying Brilla, who had sued the prosecutor in federal court because possessions taken during 1989 police raids had not been returned to him. "

19. You're right...
...it's much better to just let the pastor die without anyone having a chance to protect him.

18. Apparently you shook something loose.
WHY would carrying a CCW into a church bother you? If I carry everywhere I go why should I leave it in the car when I go to church?

"A woman's trip to a convenience store near her southwest Houston apartment turned into a frightening ordeal when she was held at gunpoint and robbed as she returned home.

15. GEEZER PULLS HIS GUN ON MUGGER
Edited on Wed Nov-05-03 05:05 PM by beevul
November 5, 2003 -- A pistol-packing, 80-year-old Bronx man was arrested on gun charges after he tried to turn the tables on a mugger who beat him and stole his Social Security money, authorities said yesterday.

Feisty Lester Campbell - a retired security guard who cops said was carrying a hidden, unlicensed .38-caliber handgun - cashed his $262 Social Security check near his home on East 139th Street in Mott Haven at 10 a.m. Monday.

A husky 6-foot-tall mugger followed him into his building and onto an elevator.

As the elevator headed to his floor, the man pounced on Campbell, throwing him to the floor and hitting him in the head and body.

16. Cop fired in gun case is back on job
"A Tucson police lieutenant fired after he was federally indicted on a charge of making a false statement on a firearm-purchase form will return to work this morning - more than one month after a jury cleared him."

snip

"The case stemmed from Lara's purchase of a Glock handgun Nov. 21 for a friend who manages an apartment complex. He pleaded not guilty June 26 and was acquitted Sept. 18 - after a jury deliberated about two hours."

snip

"Although Lara's superiors decided he still violated three general orders in the incident, which came to light after the firearm he purchased was found in a drug bust, the acquittal showed he hadn't been untruthful, the act for which the agency fired him, she said."
