6 more shot to death in California
http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2009-03-30-calif-sh...

6 killed in home shooting in Santa Clara, Calif.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — Six people were shot to death, at least three of them children, and another person was critically wounded in an apparent murder-suicide at an upscale home in Silicon Valley, police said Monday.

The suspect appeared to be among the dead in the apparent "family on family" violence, Lt. Phil Cooke said.

Authorities said a neighbor called police about 8:30 p.m. Sunday to report that a woman was injured outside a townhouse in the Santa Clara community of Rivermark, about seven miles northwest of San Jose, Cooke said.

Officers found five bodies with gunshot wounds when they arrived at the home — a 10-year-old boy and a 4-year-old girl, a man in his 40s, another man in his 30s and a woman in her early 30s, said Capt. Mike Sellers.

A toddler later died at the hospital. A woman who managed to escape is in her mid-30s and was hospitalized in critical condition with multiple gunshot wounds, Sellers said.

1. That's it mandatory anti-depression drugs for everybody.
No exceptions. At least until the economy is straightened out.

2. I realize you're joking,
but sometimes anti-depression drugs make people do crazy things too. My aunt's minister committed suicide last week after a doctor switched his anti-depression meds.

7. You have to be careful with sleeping pills too.
My mother was taking the sleeping pill Adavan (I think that is how it is spelled), and it caused her to sleep walk. She woke up the next morning with a big black eye and no memory of what happened. The stove was still on, she must have been trying to cook something. Incidentaly, I know two other people who have had similar experiences. A friends wife woke up behind the wheel of her car in the driveway. She does not know if she drove anywhere or not. It seems to be a pretty dangerous drug for some people to take.

8. when you first start taking..
any new drug it takes time to get used to, but especially those that deal with psychosis and depression. I wish that prescriptions would come with out-reach numbers, and the risks thoroughly explained, so people would know what they were experiencing, and why. That said, rather than anti-depressants, I would prescribe group therapy for the entire country.

5. Does it still make your teeth brown?
We had it where I lived growing up and all the kids on "city" water had brown teeth.

6. Unbelievable.
Ok, I can understand suicide, but not murder-suicide. WTF is wrong with these people.. Is this some religious thing? Wanting to take your family with you over to the other side? Wouldn't they all be pissed?

10. I think the problem is that so many want to simply add guns ....
I think the problem is that so many want to simply add guns and not address the underlying socio-econimic problems. Most NRA types are ultra conservative republicans, libertarians, or independants who chaff at the idea of paying for social welfare programs.

If you add more guns, without addressing social problems, then the result will be more of these types of stories.

9. California gun laws
  • All gun purchases, from a dealer or private person-to-person sale, must go through a dealer for a background check ($25) before the transfer can be made
  • All gun purchasers must show valid state-issued photo ID and be thumbprinted
  • Mandatory 10-day waiting period
  • Only one handgun can per purchases per 30-day period
  • All handgun buyers must have a Handgun Safety Certificate, which requires a written test and expires every 5 years
  • All handgun purchasers must have an "approve safety device" (gun or trigger lock) for their handgun
  • All handgun buyers must show competence with the handgun's operating and safety features.
  • All handguns sold in California must be on the CADoJ's list of approved firearms
  • All semiautomatic handguns must have both a loaded-chamber indicator and a magazine-disconnect feature
  • All detachable magazines sold in California since 2000 have been limited to 10 rounds capacity; this occured while the 1993 AWB had the federal 10-round limit in force. This means that no 11+ capacity magazine has been sold in California since September 1994
