1. Actually if you go the guns topic board it's always lively. |
|
We call it the "gudgeon" as firearm topics usually get sent there to prevent flame wars.

13. Present. But I only have shotguns and rifles that my father has willed to me. |
|
Edited on Thu Jun-04-09 10:11 PM by ShortnFiery
I was the youngest by 13 years and dad would take me out shooting clay pigeons and, with my older brothers, to hunt pheasant. I didn't care much about the shotguns because, as hard as I tried to secure it, it would kick and give me a nice bruise.
Every other year or so, dad commented to my mom that he wanted to get a new rifle FOR ME. :wtf: She knew it was for him but it was a game we played so he could add to his collection. I miss those days. ;)

My Dad bought me a new shotgun in 1961 just for me. I found out, some 40 years later after unscrewing the butt plate, that he had written my name into the wood. I understand.

That is, the right to be welded, excuse me, wedded to more than one firearm. Indeed, it's probably a duty: one 1911, one Remington 870 and one AR-15 at least.

31. I use 'liberal' in its 'expansive' context |
|
I consider myself a liberal American, and seek to exercise my fundamental rights liberally. Fortunately, the US Constitution is itself a liberal document, enumerating and enshrining these rights, so that all we citizens must do is be watchful and active in protecting them.
When it comes to the First Amendment and the fundamental freedoms of speech and religion, I support all peaceable assemblies and petitions to redress grievances. I support Code Pink's efforts to raise awareness on the costs of our nation's wars, and the public-health plan's advocates' efforts to reach Baucus in his staged 'hearings.' Twenty years ago this month, I was one of the high school students protesting in solidarity with China's fledgling student democracy forces and against the Tiananmen Square crackdown. I similarly work on behalf of the separation between church & state, even as I am careful to never let this work become a barrier to any individual's free expression of their own spirituality.
When it comes to the Second Amendment, I am similarly 'liberal.' The Founding Fathers intended us citizens to be free to keep and bear arms. I do own a few, and use them for target shooting and other legal purposes. I also support efforts to reduce barriers to the exercise of this right.
I could keep going down the list, but hopefully you get the idea: liberalism = expansive about our liberties, with a social conscience besides (thus distinguishing itself from libertarianism). Fourth Amendment? I support an expansive notion of our right to be secure in our persons and properties from unreasonable search & seizure. Fourteenth Amendment? I am liberal about the need for equal protection.
Liberalism and a vigorous support of the RKBA are a natural fit.

33. Though it would cause conservitavs a stroke.. |
|
I have often thought that the founders were actually the more liberal of the people. They wanted change. The Tories wanted things to stay the same.
It seems that societies are usually broken down into 1/3rds. 1/3 liberal, 1/3 conservative, and 1/3 who do not care.
It seems this proportion may be necessary to keep us from just running off and blowing ourselves up or stagnating.

As one of the folks late to the party (I voted Republican until 2006) I often feel I'm not "liberal enough" around here but nonetheless, I am a firearm owner who is pro-environment, anti-corporatism, anti-war, anti-Patriot Act, anti-domestic-surveillance, anti-war-on-terror, anti-enemy-combatant-status, anti-war-on-drugs, pro-health-care, and pro-choice.
Consequently I vote for Democrats.
