Gunshot scares off intruder
A Richmond woman thwarted a break-in early Friday by firing a warning shot from a gun.

"She confronted him at the door," Richmond Police Chief Kris Wolski said Friday. "She fired one shot to scare the person off."

Wolski doesn't think the incident is linked to a series of home invasions and sexual assaults of women that have plagued Richmond for about two years.

The 41-year-old female resident in the 200 block of North 21st Street heard a noise and rushed to get the semiautomatic gun, he said. Wolski said her possession and use of the gun was lawful.

Police were called to the scene at 1 a.m. The suspect was wearing a baseball cap under a hoodie, but that's about all the victim could see, Wolski said.

Just wanted to post another example of an irrational coward who had nothing to fear. :sarcasm:

1. That poor man
probably just wanted a loan of money and perhaps some consensual sex in the missionary position. That woman is a paranoid freak and should be executed.

2. I hope y'all are joking

Excerpt from article:

At least eight attacks have been attributed to a man who stands about 5 feet 5 inches and strikes in the early morning hours while wearing a mask and dark hoodie.

Four more attacks are possibly linked. His female victims have ranged from a teen-ager to an 81-year-old woman.

Wolski acknowledged that the attacks are on the minds of residents, including Friday's victim.

"She was aware of the other incidents," he said. "Everyone is at a heightened level of awareness."

The police department is getting numerous calls each day with tips about potential suspects in the attacks.

"I think we are making headway," Wolski said.

I'm glad the lady had the presence of mind to go to the door armed. I'm usually so ditsy I go to the door wearing only a nightgown, and I often open the door with no idea who's on the other side. I forget I have a revolver in my nightstand drawer. I've been lucky considering ATL cop patrols are nonexistent in my neighbourhood and there are illegal alien gangs starting to roam around here.

3. Gun violence erupts overnight in city
There were three shootings overnight in Indianapolis, including one incident in which six people were wounded, two of them critically.

The violent incidents --- a pedestrian shooting a motorist, a neighborhood confrontation and a woman firing at a man on her porch -- left a total of eight people sent to hospitals with gunshot wounds.

The overnight shootings followed a week in which five people were fatally shot in Indianapolis, including one homicide on Wednesday and a triple homicide last Friday.http://www.indystar.com/article/20090611/NEWS02/906110440/Gun+violence+erupts+overnight+in+city

It would appear Indianapolis needs more guns

4. One of them was ruled self defense, my thoughts and prayers to the other victims though.

6. It would appear that you need to start your own thread. Not only
is it rude to step on a persons thread in such a manor it is also a violation of D.U. rules.

Side question: Why is it the anti's so often violate D.U. rules on posting and civility?

49. Do you believe there was a factual error in the article?

If not, where is your evidence that the AR-15 is an assault rifle. If you agree that there is an error, you've probably have already written to the authors of the article.

7. I'm glad this turned out well in the end, I am bothered
by a "warning shot". By firring a shot you have employed deadly force. It does not matter where you are aiming - it is deadly force by the simple fact of the gun going bang. By firring a "warning shot" you are setting yourself up for prosecution of unlawful deadly force.

See, by using the act of deadly force as a "warning" and argument can (and has) been made that you therefor didn't really NEED to use deadly force if a "warning" was sufficient. I know it seems strange but it is how the law works and defines things. Hopefully common sense prevails and this woman is not prosecuted for her "warning shot".

9. Generally speaking warning shots are bad.
Someone who isn't "warned" by you pointing a gun at them likely isn't going to accept any "warning".

Warning shots also can hit bystanders. Of course the legal ramifactions come into play as you discussed.
Often what gets someone in trouble is how they explain it to the cops. "Well I wasn't worried enough to shoot him so I used a warning shot". They think they are doing the right thing but they just admitted to LEO that deadly force was NOT necessary.

I was the effects of warning shots in Iraq. We had been advised AGAINST warning shots in urban area. If you do use a warning shot it should be an aimed shot into a solid object able to absorb the round. Another unit in our AO fired warning shots at everything despite us knowing the neighborhood. On one mission the other unit fired warning shot at the road. It hit at a shallow angle and skipped off the pavement, struck a 9 year old girl who died at the scene despite a good attempt by onsite medic. Not only was an innocent life lost but the cooperation we had spent months building with the neighborhood was lost.

Don't shoot warning shots.

Shoot to stop . Period.
