Teen shoots burglar
ASHTABULA — A 15-year-old shot a burglar late Friday night after the burglar and two cohorts broke into the teen’s West Side home, police said Monday. The teenager and his 14-year-old brother were home alone when three men came to the house, police said. The teens recognized two out three of the men, according to their mother, who spoke with the Star Beacon Monday.

When the boys refused to let the men in the house, one of the men took the butt of a shotgun and smashed the window out of the front door, police said. That’s when the older boy ran upstairs to retrieve his father’s handgun, his mother said.

In the meantime, the intruders told the younger teen they would kill both of them if he didn’t open the door, the mother said. "They held a gun to his head,” she said. Sgt. John Koski said the 15-year-old came down the stairs and shot one of the intruders in the leg. The men then took off.

I'm sure if they had let them in they would have just taken what they wanted and left peacefully. Criminals never kill people who can identify them after all. :sarcasm: With so many new DUer's in the Gungeon I thought would should revisit some events over the last year, lots more to come.

1. This is the second story where burglars
got shot in the leg. Those people need some target practice. Like the last one I hope they don't sue and they spend a long long time in a cell with Bubba.

3. Some people deliberately shoot for the leg.
Thinking that they can disable a person. Sometimes it works, sometimes it's dumb.

13. who said there was a backstory?
I asked why no one would SUSPECT there was.

The individuals knew each other. That could be a clue.

Sometimes taking one's gun-coloured glasses off can be enlightening.

Old guys playing cards at a social club, robbed, one defended self with gun. Hmm, looked straightforward enough ...

Here's a primer on another one and how played out here in the dungeon:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=118&topic_id=143552&mesg_id=143627

Boca Raton accountant with CCW answers the door to find what he believes to be a housebreaker and shoots him in self-defence. No arrest! Obviously legitimate self-defence! Even though the "housebreaker" was actually the neighbour's teenaged son playing doorbell pranks on Hallowe'en and was shot in the back as he ran away ... And it took a while, but the accountant did plead guilty to the puny charge of manslaughter ...

But be sure to read the one that thread is about too, in my previous post in that thread:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=118&topic_id=143552&mesg_id=143615

And have you heard of Bob Regola? The gun guy's hero, him. Hmm, I wonder what the upshot of that long and sorry tale was ...

http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/pittsburghtrib/news/westmoreland/s_577289.html

Well, there ya go. Buy your teenaged kid a handgun, leave the handgun around where the neighbour's kid (evidently suicidal, to no one's knowledge) gets hold of it and kills himself (although nobody will ever know for sure what happened), lie about everything possible to the police, insist that the other kids who saw your son playing with the handgun all the time are lying, and get off. Life is good, at least if you're a gun guy hero Republican politician.

This has always been one of my favourite tales of "defensive gun uses" (in which I suggested that it might be best to head those tales "alleged defensive gun uses":

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=118x98607

Those are some that come to mind, and just some of the reasons I keep my radar tuned when I read these little morality plays.

Corpus Christi Caller

Police said a 14-year-old boy was defending himself and his mother when he shot and killed an intruder Monday afternoon at their home on Ocean Drive.
Capt. John Houston said the 14-year-old boy, whose name was not released, was home from school after becoming ill, and his 46-year-old mother, Rose Ann Kozlowski, had just returned from the grocery store when she was confronted by a man with a knife.

Cmdr. Jesse Garcia confirmed during a news conference that police received a call from one of the residents of 4221 Ocean Drive at 12:55 p.m. and responded to a report of a man tying them up and holding them at knifepoint.

The man, only identified as a black man in his 30s or 40s, led the mother and son to the upstairs master bedroom, where he bound their hands with men's ties and ransacked the house for valuables.

"He packed up her SUV in the garage with those items. He threatened to kill them repeatedly," Houston said.

After the robber caught the woman trying to untie herself once, she was able to free herself and her son and find her husband's pistol in a security box under the bed. She tried to shut double doors to the bedroom as the man tried to push them open and her son held the gun.

"She was using all her strength to push them," Houston said, adding that the boy aimed at the man through a space in the door and fired one shot.

"He shot once and hit him in the head, killing him instantly," Houston said. "He took a life-saving measure to save his mother and himself."

Soon after the incident, police cars lined Ocean Drive near the house, which is between Ocean View Place and Aberdeen Avenue, and neighbors stood nearby watching officers investigate.

Houston said police also are investigating the possibility the man had an accomplice because neighbors reported seeing two black men in a green 1970s four-door sedan, possibly a Lincoln Continental, driving slowly around the neighborhood a couple hours before the incident.

4. I have a hard time keeping up with all the self defense stories.
I don't know how you find the time to post them. There certainly are lot of them.
And there are probably 10 cases of someone using a gun to defend themselves that don't get reported for every one that does get reported.
I don't know anybody who has reported using their gun for defense. I know of 4 unreported cases.

5. According to some..
.. if you don't report it, it must not have been particularly "life-threatening".

9. Not life threatening???
Wow. Obviously people who weren't there don't know what they are talking about. They should become more educated.

I wonder if these same people figure if a woman get beaten by her spouse or raped and doesn't report it, that it couldn't have been that bad? Don't answer that.

Unbelievable.

6. The anti-gunners always claim the gun-owner is in more danger
from an intruder using the victims gun against them or they claim the gun-owner will get killed because he is not trained. I wonder where all the examples of that actually happening are?

8. They don't list cases. They just talk about what could happen.
I prefer facts to emotion based anti-gun nonsense. I really wish we had all the numbers. Of course facts don't do much to persuade people who "just feel" so strongly.

You just gave a fine demonstration of your own words!

They don't list cases. They just talk about what could happen.

You prefer facts? Let's have some.

Of course facts don't do much to persuade people who "just feel" so strongly.

I'll bet you think you've done your productive thing for the day by posting that on an internet board.

You guys really thrive on mutual adoration, doncha?

Us guys? You mean American Democrats? Well, I don't think Canadians make sense, they seem very emotional and irrational. So there you go.
