I'm thinking of getting some family members a Remington 870 now with some reduced recoil buckshot.

1. I can understand that. You may consider a 20ga for the ladies though.

2. and as usual

"the ladies"

Some people really think they're living in the 19th century still ...

Of course, I'd think that if a woman wanted a firearm, she'd decide for herself what she wanted, and get it for herself. Strong women and all that jazz.

4. That's why my wife and daughters ask me to get guns for them. Because they want them.
And I kind of know what I am doing.

I COULD get my own music on my ipod thing what ever it is, I'd figure it out eventually. But my daughter has it done in a few minutes.

Smart women and all that jazz.

7. Of course it's for the ladies.
20 gauge shotguns are frequently used and recommended for youths and women shooters, because women tend to be physically smaller than males and have less body mass and musculature to deal with recoil.

A 20 gauge shotgun gives you 75% of the shot for only 50% of the recoil.

Recommending a 20 gauge is sound advice for anyone of smaller stature or who might be intimidated by a larger caliber weapon.

But hey, my grandmother weighed 98 pounds most of her life and I own the 12 gauge Winchester Model 12 she used to hunt ducks and pheasant with my grandfather. That and bearing 12 kids? Yeah that was a strong woman and that ain't no jazz.

I'm jealous, actually. It's far superior to my Mossberg.

12. I don't get it.
I suppose I agree with her point, but my wife went out and got that shotgun herself, so I don't see a problem.

Not a fan of 'the ladies' sort of euphamisms, but didn't seem to warrant an alert.

15. I don't often agree with you, Iverglas, but I'm going to say "Hell, yes" to this one.

Of course, I'd think that if a woman wanted a firearm, she'd decide for herself what she wanted, and get it for herself. Strong women and all that jazz.

I don't often agree with you, Iverglas, but I'm going to say "Hell, yes" to this one.

The men I've encountered personally who have presumed to go to pick out a gun for the "little lady" (their words) instead of letting her make the decision seem to me, intentionally or unintentionally, to be acting like jerks. The "little lady" is a woman who is perfectly capable of either picking out her own damn gun, or asking for suggestions from knowledgeable people if she wants advice. If she does ask for advice, fine, but presuming to make the decision for her is wrongheaded, IMO.

My sister's (now) ex-husband took that attitude with her about guns, on the theory that if you don't have a Y chromosome, you must be gun-404. When in fact, she is a nuclear engineer with two degrees who has had one-on-one firearms instruction from some very skilled and competent professionals, and is far more skilled and knowledgeable than he was or ever will be.

When my wife wanted to buy a rifle and a 9mm, I stayed the heck out of it. She occasionally asked questions, but SHE rented various pistols at the range, SHE decided what she wanted (Glock 26), and SHE bought it with no input from me.

26. So getting down loaded 12ga for the wife is OK but a full power 20ga is not? Um. OK.

27. Not saying that, if that's what *she* chooses.
Edited on Sat Jun-20-09 08:11 AM by benEzra
But saying "She should probably use a 20-gauge because she's female" instead of laying out the options (or better, letting her *try* the different options) and choose for herself is IMO presumptious.

My wife would take the full-power 12-gauge if she were into shotguns, I think; it's more about technique than body mass, and definitely has nothing to do with whether or not the shooter has a Y chromosome.

Maybe that will change some attitudes around here. That should make you and Scout very happy.

6. You might like the double barrel 20 ga for this. I have one.
Dirt simple, 2 shots. It's actually 2 shots that are faster than a pump. African hunters who can get killed by what they are hunting prefer a double rifle.
Stoeger makes some reasonable priced ones. I just wish mine was the short one instead of the long "bird" model.

Sweet little gun.

10. Second the Stoeger SXS
I picked up a Stoeger Coach Gun with the 20" barrels for around $300 a couple of years back.

The funny thing was they had an enclosure in the box to order barrel inserts that essentially turn the Coach Gun into a double rifle.

I bought two of the inserts in 45-70. I think they also had Win 300, 5.56 and 30.06 inserts?

They can be removed or put in again and you can use one as a rifle and leave the other barrel as a scattergun.

I would think one round of 00 buck and a 45-70 round, with a quick reload would take care of pretty much any problem in your immediate area up to, and maybe including, a Grizzly or Buick.

and some Minutemen that left this little girl along with her father dead.

The perps are pieces of shit. This is just another example of why this Mexican is armed.

18. Of course they are.
The minutemen are a bunch of right-wing xenophobes using vigilantism to attack Mexicans immigrants. It's like a horse-shit mixture of beer-gut militia and the KKK.

29. Just to be clear she is not a member of minuteman project.
One of those arrested, Shawna Forde, is the leader of Minutemen American Defense, a group out of Washington state that conducts operations along the U.S.-Mexican border in Arizona. The group is not related to either the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps founded by Chris Simcox, or the Minuteman Project founded by Jim Gilchrist.

http://www.azstarnet.com/metro/296911

My understanding is that most news stories about the Minutemen are referring to the "Minuteman Project Inc" which is the largest and oldest organization.

Shawna "gang" simply copied the name to gain some notoriety and public recognition.

While I don't condone the Minutemen Project they mostly watch and notify border control of people crossing the border, and provide GPS co-ordinates to facilitate capture by border agents.

19. Disgusting. Makes me want to puke.
This is disgusting. I can't stand listening to this stuff. This poor woman. Her family shot down by racists. My god. A 10-year-old daughter.

Thank goodness she was able to get her husband's gun and fend them off when they came back for her. Even the dispatchers says it was good that she knew how to use it.

I hope they find these minutemen and shut their asses down. God damn bigots.

My thoughts are with the family.

Gosh. So much to think about.

It's so eerie, I've actually thought of this as a possible scenario happening to our (Mex-American) family
