2. I think your number is rather low
With 80,000,000 gun owners at 99.995% that still calculates to 4,000 crimes today.

There's no way 4000 gun owners comitted a crime today.

3. Pro-Life Or Self-Defense
There has got to be some common ground we can agree to beyond the issues Dimbo and his "Fundie Faithful" has set forth for the future and beyond.

I fed and petted my cat today no matter what Asskrap thinks about my personal values.

I own "stuff", have for a while but never considered hiding what I have until Mike Malloy mentioned it.

8. Well just my 2 cents worth
I think everyone should be allowed to own guns, BUT before being allowed to own a gun they should run a criminal back ground check(if a person ever committed a crime with a gun they should never be allowed to own one)they should be required to have a phychological test(I know some real guns nuts who are not mentally stable enough to own a gun) and they should be required to pass a gun safety course(if they do not take the proper measures with their guns and another person gets their gun and harms someone the guns owner should be punished.

did gun owners vote for Bush over Gore?

Why does the NRA have millions of members while HCI and the Million Massive Morons only have enough for a 3-on-3 basketball game?

If gun owners wanted more gun control, wouldn't they join those groups?

Last time you guys tried to come up with a list of pro-gun Democrats, you piddled out after half a dozen names, most of whom were Zell Miller-type DINOs...and Dr. Dean, whose position is much closer to mine than it is to yours.

Meanwhile I got no problem coming up with hundreds of names pro-gun control Democrats.

"taking the Democratic party in a new direction"
Nope...it's the old wrong direction it had when Strom Thurmond, Jesse Helms and Trent Lott were staining the party.

also

The first counsels Democrats to avoid mentioning gun issues altogether. Al Gore applied this "hope" strategy in the 2000 general election -- hoping the National Rifle Association and George W. Bush wouldn't define him as anti-gun -- and it failed miserably, with Gore carrying only 35 percent of gun owners.

http://www.ndol.org/ndol_ci.cfm?kaid=119&subid=157&contentid=251918

So actual democrats saying that gore only carried 35 percent of gun owners (who make up 40% of the population) is why he lost.

Did you forget this was a topic not too long ago?

18. Note the date of the survey
"1999 National Gun Policy Survey of the National Opinion Research Center: Research Findings"

"The 1999 National Gun Policy Survey (NGPS), the fourth annual survey, was conducted by the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago in collaboration with the Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Policy and Research and The Joyce Foundation. The NGPS is a random-digit-dial telephone survey of 1,182 adults representative of the US population in the fall of 1999. It has a sampling variation of +/-3 and a response rate of 58.9 percent. The NGPS was funded by the Joyce Foundation. "

Something post 911 would be more indicative, I would think.

Gun Sales Up Post-September 11th

Sasha Foo

Since the September 11th attacks, Americans have been arming themselves.

Gun sales are up, especially for first time buyers.

"We've seen a lot of stock disappear from the shelves," said Allen Lui, manager of the Jackson Arms, a store and shooting range in South San Francisco. "Normally, when we're selling handguns, we keep a large stock. But we had a hard time keeping popular guns ... in stock."

Using the number of background checks as a gauge, the FBI reports that nationwide gun sales rose as much as 22% from September to November. The marketplace took note, with some gun makers riding the boom. A Beretta 9-milimeter, engraved with the slogan, "United We Stand," was shipped to wholesalers after the attacks. In one San Francisco store, there was a "patriot's special" -- 20% off a Mossberg shotgun.

39. And even with that little bubble...
"Gun sales fall despite Sept. 11

SAN FRANCISCO – Months after many members of a frightened nation rushed to gun shops seeking security in triggers and steel, mounting evidence suggests that the gun-buying spree is over.
The decline in handgun sales since the mid-1990s has been attributed to many factors, from tougher gun-control laws to an increased feeling of safety as crime dropped throughout the decade. But to some, the roots go deeper, suggesting a subtle shift in attitudes, as America becomes ever more suburban – and more likely to connect guns to shooting sprees than to weekend duck hunts.
Even with the post-Sept.-11 uptick, the news for handgun manufacturers has not been good. While tracing actual handgun sales is nearly impossible, a host of statistics reveal a dim picture:
• Although FBI background checks for handgun sales spiked after Sept. 11 – by 39 percent in October – the buying binge has ended. Despite the jump, the FBI did fewer background checks in 2001 than in 2000, and checks for the first two months of 2002 are already 10.5 percent below last year's pace. The checks don't necessarily mean that a sale occurred – nor do they record how many weapons might have been sold – but they're widely seen as a useful gauge of interest in handguns."

http://www.csmonitor.com/2002/0402/p01s02-ussc.html

"Fewer handguns were purchased in California last year than during any year since 1972, when overall totals were first recorded, according to figures released this week by the state.
Despite a surge in sales after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, overall sales totaled only, 155,203, down 8.2 percent from 2000."

So the same weapons that do not kill today, may eventually tomorrow. Then they will be stolen or sold or inherited and the receipent may not have the self control of the current owner.

Town passes ordinance requiring firearms

GEUDA SPRINGS, Kan. — Residents of this tiny south-central Kansas community have passed an ordinance requiring most households to have guns and ammunition.
Noncomplying residents would be fined $10 under the ordinance, passed 3-2 earlier this month by City Council members who thought it would help protect the town of 210 people. Those who suffer from physical or mental disabilities, paupers and people who conscientiously oppose firearms would be exempt.

"This ordinance fulfills the duty to protect by allowing each individual householder to provide for his or her protection," said Councilman John Brewer.
