Man robs gas station with small machine gun

Salt Lake County Sheriff's deputies are looking a man who robbed a gas station with a small machine gun Tuesday night.

He walked into the 7-Eleven at 4705 S. Holladay Blvd. about 8:15 p.m., and placed an Uzi or other mini-machine-gun on the counter, along with a bag that he told the cashier to fill with money. The cashier complied, and the man left the store. He jumped into the passenger seat of a small, light-colored pickup truck.

Witnesses followed the truck until they lost it in nearby neighborhood streets.

The man is described as being 5-feet-5-inches tall with a slight build, possibly a young person. He was dressed in black military-style clothing and wore gloves and a ski mask over his face.

The weapon might have been the semi-auto version of the Uzi.

If he laid the firearm on the counter, I wonder if the clerk could have grabbed it.

I doubt that the clerk was an expert on small arms. And there is the distinct possibility of the reporter excitedly hyping the story.

Most likely it was an extra scary looking pistol. Maybe a TEC-9.
