not a gun post. not a nerd post.

I appreciate stuff that works without drama. Stuff that works every time all the time is a beautiful thing.

comment away.

with a little Nagant revolver and "NJ Smart Gun" thrown in.

8. If my life depended on it, I'd probably change OSes
But I'll take the familiarity and universally-available parts of my 5 1/2 year old PC... :-)

Besides, Macs only have one mouse button. That just fucks me up, man.

14. One button! Thats insane
I've got two buttons and a clickable roller, and I think I need more.

My video game controller has like 10 buttons, 2 joysticks, and a directional pad.

11. Is this one of those "Windows 7 sucks because its'windows'" threads?

OSX is nice, but Windows 7 RC has been phenominal for me. I can't wait to upgrade to the released version.
I was a mac guy (OSX leopard on a macbook) but after building a PC and using W7 on it I'm confident I'll never go back to OSX.

I'm not sure how much of the advantage comes from the new hardware (8GB DDR3 RAM, triple core CPU, RAID, liquid cooling, 4870HD graphics...) but it runs W7 insanely quick and smooth. Not to mention I like the W7 OS more than OSX. The only thing holding my PC back is the hard drives - even in RAID0. I'd love some $olid $tate Drives, but don't have the cash. It really is unfair to compare to a macbook though (despite being both newer and cheaper). All I know is my PC and monitor came in under $900 and the closest MacPro costs about $3800 for just the PC. :puke:

12. Nope, not bashing. Real computers are not 1 man portable anyway
when you really want something done use Z hardware. 1520Gb of main memory, 64 cpu, everything other than pure compute is offloaded. For linear workloads that is the machine of choice.

Systems booting from sold state (DDR or NAND) or from a FC SAN are quite fast. SSD SAS drives are dropping in price as the big vendors begin using them in storage arrays. Large service providers will use nahalem chipset 2 u boxes backended by very fast disk. ILM and PIXAR come to mind. The power consumption differences between SSD and 15k FC or SAS disk is significant as well.

There are 2U (small) pcie 8 (or infiniband) attached appliances that can support upwards of 500,000iops with the right workload. There are lots of neat things coming out in this space.

Computers are cool, a good OS is cool, quality firearms are cool.

13. I'm an Ubuntu fan, myself
And I'd use it a lot more if it were more reliable on laptops (there's issues with the variety of drivers manufacturers use).

A friend of mine once told me a joke about how Macs are like Catholicism, and PCs are like Protestantism. With Macs, it's all very pretty, and there's no need to concern yourself with how it works, it just does. Whereas with PCs, you there's more involvement from the end user, and you can get into the guts and modify the bits you don't like, but by doing so, you risk running into compatibility issues and it could just turn into a big old mess.

In that regard, if Glocks are analogous to Macs, I guess PCs are analogous to 1911s. You can really muck about with 1911s, replacing this part, upgrading that part, but the end result is, all too frequently, that the gun stops working properly.
