NJ Man Indicted For Shooting His Pet Parrot
MORRISTOWN, N.J. (AP) - A New Jersey man accused of shooting and killing his African gray parrot with a BB gun because its screeching annoyed him while he was watching a NASCAR race on TV has been indicted on an animal cruelty charge.

Dennis Zeglin, 67, of Randolph was indicted Tuesday by a Morris County grand jury. The charge carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $15,000 fine.

3.  In NJ a BB gun is a "deadly weapon"
And has to be purchased from a FFl dealer. He is lucky he wasn't charged with "illegal discharge of a weapon".

12. A guy walks into a bar in Belgium with a parrot on his shoulder...
Edited on Wed Feb-03-10 05:31 AM by Euromutt
(It doesn't have to be Belgium; any predominantly Catholic are will do.)

He goes up to the bar and orders a beer.
"I want a coke!" says the parrot.
"You're not getting a coke," says the man.

He drinks his beer and orders another.
Again, the parrot says "I want a coke!"
"Listen," says the man, "If you you ask for a coke one more time, I'm going to nail you to the wall."
The parrot falls silent, and the man drinks his beer.

After a while, he finishes and orders a third.
"I want a coke!" squawks the parrot.
"Right, that's it!" says the man, produces a hammer and a few nails from a toolbox, and nails the parrot to the wall by its wings.

The parrot hangs there, and then spots the crucifix on the opposite wall. The parrot says to Jesus "So, you wanted a coke too, huh?"

26. Have any of you lived with a parrot?
Their squawks are loud and grate on the ears. Think fingernails on chalkboard and similar sounds, but louder. My wife had a conure (That is a breed of parrot.)that she had when we married. Since the bird came with her I put up with it, but I was so happy when it finally, years later, sickened and died. Now I can walk into that room and not have my ears painfully assaulted.

The do have individual emotions. Before we married the parrot was my wife's sole companion. So when I came into the picture, he hated me. I tried to two years to get him to like me, but it didn't work. So I gave up. Then I noticed that he complained bitterly (And with good reason) when I farted. So when I felt a big one coming I would go to his cage and let it rip.

On a more serious note, I do not believe that people should keep parrots for home pets. African Greys are extremely intelligent and often know what they are saying. Such intelligent birds should not be kept in cages as it is like keeping a human in a jail cell. They need their freedom, but they are also too destructive to be allowed to be free in a home. Like all birds they poop often and whenever, whereever. So you get a lot of bird poop all over the home if they are allowed freedom. And they gnaw on everything, including the rubber gasket that seals the fridge and freezer doors, and on the wood on furniture. All wooden furniture gets quickly ruined. Parrots need special zoo-like enviornments that ordinary people just can't provide. At least that was our experience with our conure.

BTW - The parrot in the picture above is a conure.

28. LOL. Ouch. I never thought of it that way.
Well, if the shoe fits....and it does appear to fit.

The actual origin is less interesting. With 150K+ account names, it is a bit difficult to come up with something different. I happened to look out the window at a thunderstorm and though if I put a color before it that it might be usable. But then again, maybe it was Freudian.

The parrot would have agreed with you that it fit.

This story popped up yesterday and it begged the question , if this had happened in Merry Ol' , would she have been charged with illegal possession of a knife ?

34. The article cited in the OP doesn't say anything about the shooter having a permit for the gun
So he's basically just a criminal, and he was already a criminal before he pulled the trigger on that poor bird.
