GUNS IN THE NEWS--December 17, 2003
As CO Liberal sez:
Please try to adhere to the following voluntary guidelines, in order that we can have an orderly discussion of gun-related news topics:
1 - Feel free to add any CURRENT stories to this thread by replying to this message. In order to be considered current, stories should have been originally posted on the Internet within the previous 24 hours, or provide follow-up to a story that was previously posted on the J/PS board. On Mondays (since many people do not log in to DU over the weekend), stories can be posted from Saturday, Sunday, or Monday.
2 - Both pro-gun and anti-gun stories, editorials, and press releases are welcome in this thread, as long as they're current. Please do not post links to items from a few years back that support your position.
3 - Bear in mind that any links to extremely right-wing sites (such as Newsmax, CNS, or the Washington Times) or intentionally pro-gun or pro-control sites (such as the NRA or the Brady Campaign) are not considered reliable sources by many DU-ers. If at all possible, try to find a link for your story from a more mainstream source, such as a general-circulation newspaper or magazine site. If you choose to use a slanted site, be prepared for any negative feedback you may receive.
4 - Do not change story titles. In other words, if the Oskosh Gazette's web site runs a story titled "Two Killed in Holdup", the title of your message should read "Two Killed in Holdup". Don't change it to "Gun Owner Kills Two People", or anything else that changes the meaning of the story.
5 - If it's not clear from the title where the story occurred, add the city, state, or country in parentheses after the title.
6 - Comment on a story by replying to that story.
7 - Please direct your comments to the story, rather than attacking the person posting the story or any person responding to the story. In accordance with DU rules, any messages that appear to be personal attacks against another DU-er or violations of any other DU rule will be reported to the moderators.
8 - If you object to these guidelines, do everyone else a favor and go to another thread.

1. Gunfire ruining theater dream (CA)
"For about five years, Hewitt Robinson has fought an uphill battle. As the leaseholder of the Colonial Theater, he has struggled to transform another broken-down theater into a gem of artistic expression.
On Monday, after a weekend shooting outside the Stockton Boulevard theater left four people wounded, Robinson said he's grown tired of the fight.
"I'm thinking about getting out of the business," he said. "If I can find anyone interested, I'll do it. I've been in the arts all my life, but I'm not sure it's worth the hassle and worry anymore."
Just two hours after the start of Saturday's rap show, a barrage of gunfire erupted in the streets south of the theater. Police said 20 or more shots were fired."

2. Family, friends recall slain teen at an emotional Del Oro service (CA)
"About 500 people gathered Monday afternoon to remember Steffen Ohland, a 15-year-old who loved basketball and soggy corn flakes, and -- said a girl who went with him to a Sadie Hawkins dance -- was "one of the few boys who actually danced" at school dances.
The gym at Del Oro High School in Loomis was packed with students, teachers and family friends of the teenager who died Dec. 10 during a violent conflict between his parents, Ronald Ohland and Daphne Pettit.
Police believe Ronald Ohland fatally shot Steffen and Pettit before killing himself."

3. Slain East P.A. man also shot at last month (CA)
"Nakia Smith last spoke to her husband, Eddie Myles, early Monday afternoon on the phone.
``As far as I know he was supposed to be setting up the Christmas tree at home,'' the East Palo Alto woman said Tuesday.
But just after they talked, about 1 p.m., Myles was shot to death in his car by two men driving by in a truck on the 1200 block of Westminster Avenue, police said. It was almost exactly a month after the 29-year-old father of two was shot on nearby Alberni Street, police and relatives said. In the Nov. 14 incident, he was found lying in the road.
Myles' death was the ninth homicide in the city this year. Last year there were seven. Authorities have made arrests in two of this year's shooting deaths -- in the April killing of 30-year-old cafe owner Kenneth Hamel, and in the June killing of Lisa Hernandez, who was 19 and pregnant."

"WORCESTER, N.Y. - A man wanted in a shooting that wounded two at a Massachusetts home supply store was arrested in upstate New York early Wednesday after a brief highway chase, authorities said.
Mark Anthony LeBreton, a 38-year-old contractor, was accused of wounding a former business collaborator and a second man Monday at a Lowe's Home Improvement store in Worcester, Mass.
The shooting touched off a two-day manhunt through Massachusetts, New Hampshire and New York that ended with LeBreton's arrest in Worcester, N.Y., about 50 miles southwest of Albany. "

6. Closing arguments heard in Malvo case
The latest on the gun rights poster boy....

"CHESAPEAKE -- Sniper suspect Lee Boyd Malvo's lawyers say he was insane, having fallen under the spell of a controlling, older man described by some as a pied piper.
The prosecution says that if any brainwashing took place, it was by the mental health experts who examined the now-18-year-old. Malvo and John Allen Muhammad were two "peas in a pod," prosecutor Robert F. Horan Jr. said Tuesday, and their motivation was nothing more than greed.
Now, it's up to the jury to decide.
After an afternoon of closing statements in Chesapeake Circuit Court - and more than a month of testimony - Malvo's capital murder case was turned over to the jury of four men and eight women just after 4 p.m. Tuesday."

According to Glynn County police, 28-year-old Joel Chris Blankenship entered a home on Dovewood Drive in the River Ridge subdivision north of Brunswick just after 8 a.m. Saturday and got into a fight with the homeowner, 38-year-old Andrew Worsham of Jesup.

13. Shot at House Linked to Ohio Shootings
"COLUMBUS, Ohio - Investigators on Wednesday linked a shot fired at a house to a series of 15 other shootings along a highway.
No one was injured in the shooting Monday, the third shooting since Nov. 25, when a woman was shot to death in a car on Interstate 270 south of the city. No one else has been hurt in the string of shootings that began in May.
The bullet from the latest shooting — found in a bathtub — is the seventh to be linked ballistically to the shootings, Franklin County Sheriff's Chief Deputy Steve Martin said. "
