Store Owner Shoots At Would-be Robbers - this is how legal guns end up on the street......
KENSINGTON, Md. - Two would-be robbers walked into the Sandro Jewelry and Boutique antiques store in Kensington's Antiques Row Tuesday, police said, they got more than they bargained for.

Investigators fear the would-be robbers may now be armed. They say the shop owner had two weapons, and a .38-caliber pistol is now missing.

1. more guns on the street.
http://abcnews.go.com/TheLaw/homeland-security-lost-dozens-guns-report/story?id=9875383

"Guns meant to help safeguard America found their way into the hands of known criminals after absent-minded federal officers left firearms unsecured everywhere from fast-food restaurants to bowling alleys, according to a report by the Department of Homeland Security. "

I guess only police agencies are trained to own firearms.

13. Is is any less relevant?
The fact is illegal firearms come from multiple sources, something the thread originator fails to acknowledge. Otherwise one might conclude there is an agenda.

Clearly police should not be allowed to have guns. That way the they won't end up on the streets.

11. The primary source of guns to the criminal circuit (in the US) is crooked FFLs
Which is why we have the ATF to keep tabs on them, and I have no issue with that.

15. Who's Tom Diaz?
My source is a 2000 ATF report, Following The Gun; it's by no means fully reliable, in that it tries to mislead by obfuscating certain details (e.g. it mentions that X number of guns enter the black market at gun shows, but does not distinguish between sales by FFLs and by private sellers), but it does not tell outright lies (a close reading reveals that the suspects who sold the most guns to traffickers at gun shows were FFLs, and the worst private sellers were acting as cutouts for crooked FFLs, but you do have to read closely).
