Pistol permit applications on the rise in Oswego County (New York)
Oswego County Clerk George Williams delivered some startling news to the legislature’s Community and Consumer Affairs committee during the April 22 meeting.

Pistol permit applications have increased sharply, following both a state and national trend, he noted. “Something is happening in this country,” Williams added.

During the entire year of 2008, the county clerk’s office handed out 208 pistol permit application packets. Of those, 67 were returned. For 2009, 428 application packets were handed out and 110 were returned.

As of the date of the committee meeting, 400 application packets were given out and 142 have been returned. That is more than double the number of pistol permits issued for 2008. “Something’s on the move,” Williams said, adding that other county clerks in the state are seeing the same trend. “It’s scary.”

Legislator Louella LeClair said she didn’t feel it is scary, but rather American’s choosing their rights. “I think patriotism is back,” she said.

What's TRULY scary is County Clerk Williams belief that people exercising a 2nd amendment right is "scary"

has been around for over 10 years, I'm amused that the Oswego County Clerk has finally noticed that "something is happening"...For one thing, violent crime is down considerably in the US.

"Scarey" indeed to think about that bill of rights, isn't it?

3. The Binghamton rampage shooting probably triggered people's paranoia.
Something in the vague nature of I'd Better Arm Myself Just In Case.

Not realizing they are just making the problem worse.

Typical guns-as-solution-to-guns kneejerk response, really.

4. Better to be morally superior (and still dead) instead of having the
ability to defend your life, huh?

5. Seems like you envision a nation of quick-draw artists trying to get the drop on each other.
Better? Or worse?

9. The chickens continue to come home too roost. Too early to declare peace.

16. That proves that criminals still have guns and they is why the law-abiding need them too. N/T

8. Law-abiding people don't "get the drop" on each other.
We don't need to. We want those guns to be able to fight back against criminals.

10. Shooting first is the imperative, however.
Made so by the general public's access to guns and ammo.

15. Not really. Shooting second will do.
If the felon knows that he will get shot for his attempted violence, even if it is after he has hurt his victim, then he is likely to not attempt the violence. So nobody gets hurt.

Sort of like Mutual Assured Destruction during the Cold War. Nobody wanted to use nukes because of fear of retaliation.

17. Exactly correct.
Criminals want easy targets, after all, they're addicted to breathing and stuff and don't want that necessary body function to suddenly stop.

12. What other solution is there to guns?
Typical guns-as-solution-to-guns kneejerk response, really.

So, Shares, what do you suggest as an alternative solution to guns? I know you favor getting rid of them all, but until that happens, what should people use as solution to guns today?

7. People are primarily concerned
with circumstances in their immediate proximity. Sex, birth and death are the big three for any living organism, and human beings are no different. That's why birth control, civil unions, and guns are such potent wedge issues.

Humans are tool using mammals with opposable thumbs. If they feel threatened for any reason, they will seek out a tool to defend themselves. A gun is the best tool for personal defense. The desire for effective self defense can never be regulated away. The need for self defense can be mitigated through effective and equitable social policy.

It figures a Republican teabag pandering twit like Louella LeClair would associate patriotism with gun sales and the reporter would set her quote against the word "scary" used by the court clerk. It makes good copy but is otherwise useless as information about firearms sales or why they are on the upswing.

13. “I think patriotism is back,”
Redneck jingoism is more like it.

14. So being "patriotic" equats to redneck jingoism?
Does that mean patriotic DU'ers (who happen to own and carry guns) are rednecks?

Just curious
