Two gun bills on Georgia Governor's desk
The General Assembly passed two major gun related bills toward the end of the session, one on the evening of the very last day. Both bills are now sitting on Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue's desk awaiting a signature or veto.

SB 308 repeals Georgia's 140 year old public gathering law and replaces it with a more easily understandable, and shorter, list of places off limits.

SB 291 would decriminalize the carry of firearms in Georgia airports (like 40 other states) with clear language, make licensing renewals easier for persons holding a valid license, and prohibit government seizure of firearms during a time of declared emergency, as the federal government and several states, including California, have recently done.

So what can you do?

Are you within an hour's drive of Atlanta? If so, then please stop by the Capitol. When you enter the Capitol Building on the west side main entrance, the Governor's office is directly on your left. Stop in for a visit and ask the Governor to sign both bills. Assuming you do not get to see him in person, leave a message. Something like the following will work:

Hello, I am "so and so," and I voted for Governor Perdue. I wanted to let him know that I would very much like him to sign SB 308 into law. I would also like him to sign SB 291. These bills are extremely important to me. Thank you.

It really is that easy.

Then make sure you follow up by mailing a handwritten letter, email, and telephone. Then ask all of your friends and family to do the same.

The Honorable Sonny Perdue
State Capitol
Atlanta, Georgia 30334
Phone: 404-656-1776
Fax: 404-657-7332

Please be aware that many organizations are asking their members to urge the Governor to veto these bills, so there is a lot of pressure on the Governor to veto these bills. Please take the time to make your voice be heard in favor of liberty. Ask the Governor to sign both bills into law.

1. Yes. Encourage people to kiss the ass of a crooked Republican Governor at Democratic Underground.
Very good.

4. Yeah, those icky Civil Rights....
Can't have them being approved by Republicans, that would so undermine Democratic party positions... or something.

5. Don't cut off your nose to spite your face............
I see so many people bitch about the lack of bipartisan cooperation to resolve important issues, and then I see comments like this.
No wonder nothing ever gets done!

6. Anything Sonny Perdue does is of no interest to me.
He is free to screw up his state all he pleases. He's what the electorate there chose on election day.

When his people have had enough, they will vote him out, but I wouldn't hold my breath waiting.
If I lived in Georgia, I would be the first one to vote him out.

11. So you'd expect me to say "Hello, I voted for Gov. Perdue, and...", as you suggest?
Edited on Thu May-06-10 01:39 PM by TheCowsCameHome
No freakin' way would I vote for Sonny Perdue, or worse yet, say that I did.

8. Absolutely. I don't care if the Gov. has a D or a R after their name
As long as they fully support ALL civil rights.

9. "Bi-partisan cooperation" to a lot of people means "Do it my way"
D and R included

10. egads. This is not an important issue.
On the scale of things, it's a non-issue, yet gun advocates feel obligated to treat it as if it's the ONLY issue. That's obsession for ya.

Oh well I've ranted about the gun obsessed often and in high dudgeon - the airport bill just proves the point, no further ranting required. My work is done.

Personally I don't care one way or another - it doesn't personally impact me AT ALL and the ONLY time it might is if some loon with a gun starts seeing purple lizards instead of gangbangers and wiferapers for a refreshing change of loony tunes. At that point the rest is just a numbers game in which no fat boy with a pop gun is going to be able to influence the outcome.

14. You are in the Gun forum.
There are lot of other forums on this site for lots of other issues, and you will find a lot of us who post here also post in those other places.

16. what exactly is your point?
I'm a gun owner and I post in lots of forums too. I've had a running theory that truly sane people (and that probably does not include me :P) don't post in the gungeon.

I'll extend that theory to say that there really is a general tenor of "we are oppressed" coupled with "see if guns were everywhere there would be no more problems", which is a strange form of identity to cling to.

Gun owners are not oppressed. Gun grabbers and gangbangers are not under every rock (and yes, I am using language liberally to make the point). Yet in THIS forum on DU of all places it is indistinguishable from the gun forum on any ultra conservative site.

I'm glad you post in other forums, many in the gungeon do not post anywhere else. It's kind of like this forum is DU's little nudge nudge wink wink secret, as a simple scan of the forum topics will underscore.
