From where I sit, there are an awful lot of sell-outs out there. Clarence Thomas, Thomas Sowell, Walter Williams, Colin Powell, Condoleeza Rice, J. C. Watts, etc, etc, etc.......

I wouldn't use the "uncle" term, RoeBear, because as a white man I'm not comfortable using it. "Sell-out" is a more race-neutral term, IMHO. It simply implies that someone puts their personal interests ahead of the community in general.

29. how about this one?
CO Liberal says:

I don't like assholes with guns - regardless of race, creed, or national origin. If someone is an asshole who has little regard for toher people, then they should be kept as far away from guns as possible.

And you say:

So now Malone must be an asshole because he has a gun?

If you weren't intending to CHARACTERIZE what CO Liberal said as "Malone is an asshole because he has a gun", why would you ask him that question?

And if that isn't a MISCHARACTERIZATION of what CO Liberal said, what would you call it?

(If you want to call it an accurate representation of what CO Liberal said, I strongly suggest that you come up with WHAT HE SAID that can be accurately represented as that.)

And how about this one?

CO Liberal said:

Anyone can have a gun and simply be a gun owner. If that person does things with that gun that intimidates others or disregards the safety and well-being of other people, then that person crosses over to being an asshole.

and you say:

In a matter of minutes he went from being a man you knew nothing about to an asshole, all because of pre-conceived ideas.

Funny. I didn't see CO Liberal saying that Malone was an asshole (because he owns a gun or otherwise), ANYWHERE.

I didn't even see it in the patchwork quilt you made of the things that he had said, in which you either pretended that (you thought) CO Liberal's comments had been about or in response to things they were plainly not about or in response to, or presented your genuine but bizarrely mistaken idea that CO Liberal's comments had been about or in response to things that they were plainly not about or in response to.

How 'bout you try that little exercise again: copy and paste the things said by yourself and CO Liberal, complete and in proper chronological order, and explain how you came to the conclusion (or why you stated the conclusion) that CO Liberal had said what you have accused him of saying.

You really have made some pretty strong accusations here, accusing CO Liberal of some saying some stuff that is generally not acceptable at DU, and you really oughta do a better job of substantiating those allegations.

Or, as I was saying just yesterday about another unfounded and malicious allegation that you saw fit to repeat at some length: decide that the wise and honourable thing to do would be to withdraw your allegations -- both that CO Liberal said anything you have accused him of saying, and that he did so because of "pre-conceived ideas" (such a delicate euphemism).

Come up with any evidence that the KKK funds abortion clinics in the inner city yet ... other than the hateful rumour-mongering of virulent anti-choice organizations? I haven't noticed you withdrawing that unfounded misrepresentation of other people (providers of abortion services in inner-city areas) yet.

43. RoeBear apparently finds it interesting

that no one responded to my comments in this thread. (Trust me, I know.)

Me, I find it odd that anyone would find it interesting that he didn't do something, let alone make a point of telling me he found it interesting.

I mean, after all, the comments (and questions, don't forget) in the post above this one were directed to RoeBear. ???

Me, I'm not at all surprised at anyone's failure to reply to anything I said, and don't find it necessarily interesting that they don't. I always think there are several possibilities for this.

One would be that I have accurately identified an intentional and just-veiled-enough attack on someone's character, and the person who committed the attack can't quite come up with a way of credibly denying it.

Another would be that whomever I was addressing completely failed to understand a word I said.

Then there's the possibility that whoever I was addressing had to go to work, or to sleep, or out for lunch, or to Paris. Or died. I sure wouldn't want to assume s/he *didn't* and go saying anything based on such an unfounded assumption.

And it's always possible that the person I was addressing just got bored, and, not being answerable to me for anything at all, wandered off to do something more fun.

There are doubtless many other possible explanations for why anyone would not respond to a post at DU addressed to him/her -- or why anyone else would not respond to a post addressed to someone else. My list is non-exhaustive, and I would certainly not want to be seen as claiming that anyone had any particular reason, since I'm not.

But durn, I'm always curious. I know why one particular other person didn't respond to anything I said, or much of what others said in this thread (because he told me too). Why didn't the rest of ya?

It's probably too much to ask that someone who didn't respond to a post then respond to a post asking why ... so I expect I'll just have to live with my curiosity. And I expect I'll get along pretty good. But hey, if anybody wants to tell me why s/he doesn't answer questions, I'll be all ears.

Except that now I have to go home and be deprived of my regular dose of 24 (nothing like watching a bunch of fine Canadian actors, with those other excellent Canadians, producer and whatnot, working behind the scenes, in a finely crafted suspenser) ... because of some boring stuff going on down there tonight that's going to be all over the darned airwaves.

I hope nobody will take this the wrong way ... I'm sure many Democrats in Congress are fine people and I might very well vote for one of them if I were making a choice ... but if they start applauding the vicious stupid cretin making the speech this time, I think I might puke. If they go for the whole-hog standing ovation deal again, now that he's not just proposing to violate international law and kill children, he's DONE IT (and violated the rights of Canadians by shipping them to Syria so that they'll be tortured for a few months, and ... ah, never mind, we all know it all), I might be shopping for a new TV. Maybe I should just watch an STNG rerun.

I feel like I'm being baited here, and I won't take the bait.

It's obvious that you see Karl Malone as a famous black man who agrees with you. I see him as a man who's putting his personal interests ahead of the black community in general - a community that has suffered horribly as a result of the gun epidemic in this country, and contrinues to suffer from gun violence.

See you in another thread. I'm done posting in this one.

40. I just dunno
So Karl Malone is another black man whose overriding responsibility is supposed to be to the black community? We white people seem to be allowed to differ on lots of different views but when black people do it, they seem to become sellouts.

You wanna offer up a white one who has placed him/herself in the position of a role model for his/her community and implicity accepted that position by PROFITING FROM IT and then acting contrary to his/her community's interests so we can call him a sell-out too? Whose community is affected by a particular problem more severely and at higher rates than other communities, and who contributes to that problem rather than to solutions? (In your opinion, of course, since you're quite free to have and express your own.)

Who said that Malone's overriding responsibility was to the black community? Can you provide a name and a quotation, please?

Who said that black people who take public positions on matters of public policy that are different from the views that someone regards as sound and in the public interest "become sellouts" but that white people who take public positions on matters of public policy that are different from the views that someone regards as sound and in the public interest don't?

Surely you're not suggesting that someone said something different from that about black people, are you? So why would it "seem" (to you?) that black people "become" something that white people don't, when they do the same thing -- when the "thing" in question WAS NOT "differ"ing on anything?

Surely you wouldn't have intended to misrepresent what someone said quite that badly.

35. Are you lumping me in with the criminals?
Because I use a gun to defend myself against them? Or do you think that only criminals have guns? Maybe you should look at the cause of the problem. The root cause is a complete breakdown in the social structure. In school, our kids are laughed at for getting A grades. Good luck trying to find two parent homes. We got moms dressing up little kids like gang members, and no father figures. We've got people blaming the cops for their kids getting arrested for drug dealing. People need to take responsibility for themselves. I am responsible for my safety, the cops aren't going to save me, I'm gonna save me. I have a CCW license, and I use it. Daily. The little punks know better than to mess with Mr. Stryker. The only way we will get a better neighborhood around here is to have the power at our disposal to run the drug dealing lowlifes off our front stoops.

41. I give up

Why does it seem like you think only blacks can "sell out"

Why does it?

I tried reading what he wrote front-to-back, upside down, standing on my head ... but I just couldn't get it to seem that way at all to me.

Maybe if you explained what bit it was that made it seem to YOU like he thinks that, we could put our heads together and help you correct whatever mistake you're making, or overcome whatever challenge might be preventing you from seeing what's really there.

Your list of people are all black...what would Ted Nugent have to do with Malone's beliefs about guns in the first place?

(I give up. What does your question about Ted Nugent have to do with your assertion that everybody on CO Liberal's list is black? But to answer the question -- RoeBear said, in his initial post in the thread: "I'd like to know what he thinks of Ted Nugent." He should probably ask him, if he really wants to know, of course. And you should put your question to RoeBear maybe.)

I suppose that CO Liberal's list of sell-outs was all black because the point he was making was that he was calling them sell-outs NOT because of their colour -- that being why he did not call them Uncle Toms, which he might have done if their colour was relevant to his point. Eh?

I can name some sell-outs for you, if you like. Phyllis Schlafly, Mother Teresa, Patricia Heaton, ... oh damn, they're all women, and they all sold out women. I guess if I were in a thread talking about a woman who sold out other women, and I were challenged for being sexist (gosh, I wonder what CO Liberal was challenged for allegedly being), I shouldn't give other women as examples of sell-outs, 'cause then I'd just obviously be a sexist.

And what makes you think that whatever he says about Nugent has anything to do with "putting personal interests ahead of the community in general"?

Ah ... gee ... I'm trying hard to think of an answer.

How about the notion that someone who accepted as a colleague, in order to serve his own interests (whatever they might be ... that RKBA business, or making money ...) someone else who frequently said things like ...

http://www.nocompromise.org/news/000731c.html

Besides, apartheid isn't that cut-and-dry.
All men are not created equal.

(I mean, apart from the appalling grammar: it's cut and dried, for cripes sake.)

Yeah, we want to go to Saudi Arabia, man,
and see if we can't get a four iron and knock
people's laundry off the top of their heads.

(Just for good measure ... I won't bother with what he has said about the Japanese, hispanic migrants, women ...)

... and uses words quite a bit less attractive than "sell-out" to describe black people

... maybe has some interests he's serving other than the interests of, um, less fortunate members of his community ... or hell, of the human race.

25. general democratic party vs guns?
Forgive me for some ignorance here. Does the democratic party or a majority thereof wish to get rid of the second amendment. Please keep in mind it wasn't put there for hunting. Nor for personal protection. It was put there to ensure if the government itself would be held accountable for its promises and in the event of a political system coming into to power that did not represent the people; the people could remove it. Hunting has become so expensive that it is not worth it. Chicken prices are quite low :P. Personal protection, well...thats a bias based on your view of the police and ill leave that to you to figure out. Protection from government though would be silly in that most laws have already disarmed the general populace that any attempt to reclaim power would be unsuccessful. Benjamin Franklin said "They who would give up an essential liberty for temporary security, deserve neither liberty or security." From the above facts though, guns really serve no purpose anymore. The liberty has been removed. My question is this since most people here tend to be anti NRA and thus likely anti gun, why does not the democratic party simply take a stand and say we want to take away all the guns? To me it personally seems, well, cowardly to sway heavily for taking them away, yet not come out and just say that because of loosing some voters.

Keep in mind i am neither a democrat or republican and just wanna see bush gone. If that can only happen by voting for a democrat, so be it.

27. More on Malone...
"About the only thing I'd rather do than play basketball is hunt. There's nothing like enjoying the great outdoors with my friends and family. Plus the challenge posed by the superior senses of your game. I grew up hunting in Louisiana and I think it's a tradition we should pass on."

"His ad has already raised some criticism from anti-gun extremists, and The Salt Lake Tribune reported this week that a small, local organization called Utahns Against Gun Violence (UAGV) has questioned Malone's decision to be featured in the ad. Salt Lake City attorney Steve Gunn, who heads UAGV, commented, "I just hope he knows what he's talking about, but I doubt that he does....I doubt anyone will take him too seriously." Malone was also quoted in the same article as saying, "You can take away a lot of things from Karl Malone, but his guns, that's not one of them."

http://www.nrawinningteam.com/9911/malone.html

I imagine some folks will accuse him of being a lunatic asswipe, and be afraid of the "mail man" owning guns because he might go postal!! (sorry, couldn't resist)

28. Operative word, "small"
"...a small, local organization called Utahns Against Gun Violence..."

First they define the group as small then proceed to quote what the guy says with no effort to find an opposing point of view. It gives a handful of activists a level of credibility they may not deserve.

No problem there, as long as it only runs on the editorial page and doesn't pose as news.

30. okay, I asked google
"Karl Malone" NRA job

I was curious to know what this guy's day job was, and now I know what it is. For some reason, I'd expected to find out that he was some kinda ordinary joe ...

Anyhow, here's one of the first things google offered me:
http://espn.go.com/page2/s/caple/030722.html

I expect that some of those who know the backstory might find it funny.

(The episode opens as PAYTON bursts into the apartment he shares with MALONE, who is sitting in an easy chair, watching "Baywatch" and cleaning his collection of shotguns.)

... VOICEOVER: Can two NBA superstars on a tight budget share an apartment without driving each other crazy?

(The episode opens with PAYTON walking into the apartment to find MALONE painting a white stripe down the middle of the living room.)

PAYTON: What the @$*& you doing, Dog?

MALONE: I've had it with your carousing, your constant parade of friends and associates, your loud music, your entire attitude and, most of all, your garbage strewn all over the place. So I'm painting a line dividing the apartment in half. From now on, you stay on your half and I stay on my half, and we won't have any problems.
