GUNS IN THE NEWS--January 29, 2004
As CO Liberal sez:
Please try to adhere to the following voluntary guidelines, in order that we can have an orderly discussion of gun-related news topics:
1 - Feel free to add any CURRENT stories to this thread by replying to this message. In order to be considered current, stories should have been originally posted on the Internet within the previous 24 hours, or provide follow-up to a story that was previously posted on the J/PS board. On Mondays (since many people do not log in to DU over the weekend), stories can be posted from Saturday, Sunday, or Monday.
2 - Both pro-gun and anti-gun stories, editorials, and press releases are welcome in this thread, as long as they're current. Please do not post links to items from a few years back that support your position.
3 - Bear in mind that any links to extremely right-wing sites (such as Newsmax, CNS, or the Washington Times) or intentionally pro-gun or pro-control sites (such as the NRA or the Brady Campaign) are not considered reliable sources by many DU-ers. If at all possible, try to find a link for your story from a more mainstream source, such as a general-circulation newspaper or magazine site. If you choose to use a slanted site, be prepared for any negative feedback you may receive.
4 - Do not change story titles. In other words, if the Oskosh Gazette's web site runs a story titled "Two Killed in Holdup", the title of your message should read "Two Killed in Holdup". Don't change it to "Gun Owner Kills Two People", or anything else that changes the meaning of the story.
5 - If it's not clear from the title where the story occurred, add the city, state, or country in parentheses after the title.
6 - Comment on a story by replying to that story.
7 - Please direct your comments to the story, rather than attacking the person posting the story or any person responding to the story. In accordance with DU rules, any messages that appear to be personal attacks against another DU-er or violations of any other DU rule will be reported to the moderators.
8 - If you object to these guidelines, do everyone else a favor and go to another thread.

"Thomas "Gene" Metcalf sang the blues, played the blues and died a blues man on his 80th birthday.
He drove a Lincoln Town Car with "MR BLUES" on the vanity plate.
But the man once imprisoned for shooting someone became a shooting victim himself. During an apparent robbery, three men came into his home in the 2100 block of North Erie around 7 p.m. on Thursday and left him with at least three gunshot wounds. He died Saturday."

CPD Deploys New Gun Teams
Tactical Officers In Search Of Gang Guns

POSTED: 6:39 AM CST January 29, 2004
UPDATED: 8:36 AM CST January 29, 2004

CHICAGO --
Police Superintendent Phil Cline praised a newly formed gun unit Wednesday for its part in arresting two men and seizing four weapons and drugs in a south side home.

Police arrested the two men at a home in the 6200 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue where they seized more than half a kilo of crack cocaine with a street value of $75,000, the four guns and $4,000 in cash.

After gathering information, the Gun Unit obtained a search warrant and went to the home, police News Affairs Officer Alice Casanova said earlier.

Cline said the city is now sending teams of its best tactical officers to the far south side to root out guns that support drug and gang activity.

Police: Children should be aware of gun dangers

BLOOMINGTON --
Children should be made aware of the inherent dangers and legal consequences of handling guns even if there are none in their household, Bloomington police say.

The warning comes in the wake of Monday's incident in which authorities said a Sheridan Elementary student accidentally fired a .22-caliber pistol on a bus after school. No injuries or damage was reported.

"If you look at the potential of what happened Monday, we're very fortunate nobody was injured," said Mark Ashmore, Drug Abuse Resistance Education officer for Bloomington police. DARE officers teach gun awareness as part of their classroom instruction.

"We also encourage parents to talk to their child about gun safety," said Ashmore. "We encourage the use of trigger locks on guns, but that does not prevent a child from having access to a gun. Parents need to keep them in the safest place possible."

Heated game of Taboo ends with guns drawn

Associated Press
Jan. 29, 2004 07:05 AM

CONWAY, Ark. -
The party game wasn't the only thing taboo. Three men were arrested on felony charges after a game of Taboo went awry at a Conway home.

Officers were called to the home Sunday after two men threatened others with guns because they were losing the game, in which one teammate gives clues about certain subject matter, but using certain words is taboo.

One of the people in the apartment told police the men were yelling and cussing and threatened them with handguns.

Officers searched a car at the scene for weapons and found hypodermic needles and drug paraphernalia.

Students from Hiram Johnson High School were held inside classrooms for more than an hour Wednesday afternoon after a teacher saw a male student holding a gun while standing over a female student, officials said.

...since people are still gonna kill people, we maight as well do away with all the laws prohibiting it.

is enforce the laws in place and hold people responsible for their actions. Come back to the real world where we already know that more laws won't deter CRIMINALS from breaking the law.

Guns in the hands of honest citizens save lives and property and, yes, gun-control laws only affect the law-abiding citizens

26. No death penalty in Burkheimer case (WA)
"EVERETT — Snohomish County Prosecutor Janice Ellis said yesterday she will not seek the death penalty against two men accused of killing Rachel Burkheimer in September 2002.
Ellis said that even though she believes John Anderson, 21, shot and killed the 18-year-old Marysville woman, she doubts a jury would send him to death row on the charge of aggravated first-degree murder. She expects Anderson's lawyers would tell jurors during the trial about neglect and violence he endured as a child, which would "give them reason to give him mercy," she said. "

47. Dutch Lawyers: Suspected River Oaks Killer Cannot Be Extradited
"An American millionaire sought by a U.S. federal grand jury for allegedly taking out a contract to kill his wife cannot be extradited for murder because he already has been acquitted by a U.S. state court, Dutch defense lawyers and prosecutors agreed Tuesday.
Robert Angleton could be extradited, however, on new charges of tax fraud and possession of firearms, but not to face double jeopardy for the murder charges, a Dutch prosecutor told the Haarlem District Court.
Angleton's federal indictment accuses him of murder-for-hire, conspiracy to commit murder, four counts of tax fraud and possession of an illegal firearm with the intent to commit a violent act, District Attorney Nicole Vogelzang told Dutch judges hearing Angleton's case. "

48. Police Search For 'Dangerous' Man Who Eluded SWAT Team
"Police were called to a house on Spring Glenn Road around 5 p.m. after they said Ehlan McCracken, 26, pointed a gun at a woman who was waiting in his driveway while her husband went in to pick up their child from the day-care center next door.
The woman said the man came out of the house, gave her a rude hand gesture, which she returned. She told police he then retreived a gun from the house and pointed it at her.
The neighborhood was evacuated while police surrounded the home. McCracken's mother told officers that he was diagnosed with schizophrenia when he was young, and he takes medication for it. She refused to let police into the house, saying that McCracken reacts poorly to people he doesn't know, and might hurt them.
When police stormed the house about 1 a.m., McCracken was gone. But inside the man's bedroom, they found an AK-47 assault-style rifle, a 9mm handgun, more than 5,000 rounds of ammunition, brass knuckles and a survival knife.
Parents who use the All Faith Daycare Center were shocked to learn that a man with guns lived next door, and is now on the run from police. "
