ATF ‘emergency’ long gun reporting an agenda-driven power grab
“The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) is moving to require federally licensed firearms retailers to report multiple sales of modern sporting rifles beginning January 5, 2011,” the National Shooting Sports Foundation warns in a Dec. 17 statement.*

Specifically, the ATF requirement calls for firearms retailers to report multiple sales, or other dispositions, of two or more .22 caliber or larger semi-automatic rifles that are capable of accepting a detachable magazine and are purchased by the same individual within five consecutive business days.

You can read the ATF mandate in its Federal Register Notice, where they call it a “60-Day Emergency Notice of Information Collection.” What the “emergency is, or why it’s an emergency now remain unsaid, although they do invite public comment, and they even direct what they want you to talk about:

Your comments should address one or more of the following four points:

—Evaluate whether the proposed collection of information is necessary for the proper performance of the functions of the agency, including whether the information will have practical utility;

—Evaluate the accuracy of the agencies estimate of the burden of the proposed collection of information, including the validity of the methodology and assumptions used;

—Enhance the quality, utility, and clarity of the information to be collected; and

—Minimize the burden of the collection of information on those who are to respond, including through the use of appropriate automated, electronic, mechanical, or other technological collection techniques or other forms of information technology, e.g., permitting electronic submission of responses.

That’s funny. I don’t see anything in there about “Assess where in the Constitution such authority in data-gathering is determined consistent with the intent of the Founders that 'the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.'” I guess that kind of archaic thinking generally results in a scornful “Are you serious?” rejection these days…

1. ATF has a history of not following the laws when they don't like them...
I believe much of this comes from our Attorney General, too...

2. It's probably in the conservanazis' Patriot (my ass) Act.

This will surely get the gun-tottin',god-lovin', homophobic conservanazis really excited. At the same time, they will never whine about the biggest invasion of individual rights and privacy. Under bu$h's DARPA and the Patriot (my ass) Act , ALL information collected is against individuals that can be used against them. So, the activity the ATF is supposedly doing is just part of the information collected against idividuals.

The complaints against the ATF should not be near as strong as it should be against the bu$h/conservanazi Patriot (my ass) Act. If you own a gun, like I do, one has to be aware that the conservanazis under bu$h set an information collection system that records an idividuals every act. Your every financial transaction, phone calls, Internet activity is being watched. So for all you closeted conservanazi gays, you are being watched and reported to the conservanazi republiklan party.

The bu$h/cheney regime put into place a system that makes Hiter's Germany look juvenile.

3. Don't be fooled. I have friends on the right who are as pissed off
about the Patriot Act as you are.

4. and you probably won't hear a peep out of them except to blame Obama
Every time some consrvanazis whine about rights to privacy, I remind them who shoved this "patriot" act on us. The conservanazi true believers eagerly await another conservanazi take over of our government so the corporations can finish destroying this country. They keep their mouths shut except to spew out the conservanazi talking points and to demonize Obama, Liberals, Progressives, Democrats and Republicans who don't agree with them. I also remind them that bu$h was a conservanazi republiklan,like them, and he is still hated by many and regarded as the worst US president ever. The illegal invasion of Iraq, the failed war in Afghanistan and the Patriot (my ass) Act are legacies of bu$h regime, along with the "new" Depression.

So, if conservanazi gun nuts are pissed at the ATF's actions, it's because the Nazi Rifle Assn. has demonized the ATF for years. The ATF has been hindered by the conservanazis in our government at the behest of the NRA, who believe in enforcing laws on others and not all law breakers.
I own my guns, use them periodically, keep them mostly for protection. Personally, I KNOW THEY KNOW. I worked in Intelligence for years.
