Was border agent killed with gun purchased at Glendale store?

Terry’s family says they are outraged. Brian’s mother, Carolyn Terry, says from their home in Michigan, “It never leaves our mind. It’s like looking at a picture, talking to a picture. Like ‘Brian, tell me what happened, tell me what happened someway’.”

Grassley has sent letters to the Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms Bureau and the U.S. Justice Department demanding explanations.

In his most recent letter he wrote, “ATF agents told my staff that the agency allowed the sale of assault rifles to known and suspected straw purchasers for an illegal trafficking ring near the southwest border.”

Terry’s mother says federal authorities have told her the same thing. “He told me then on the phone that the guns retrieved at the scene had been sold in the United State.”

1. I thought there was no such thing as an assault rifle.
Oh, when an ATF agent sells a rifle it *becomes* an assault rifle.

The people they sell it to are "straw purchasers", members of an "illegal trafficking ring".

Unless they're powderheads doing the same thing at a gun show. Yep, all unraveling now. :D

4. Enjoy your snark.
Enjoy your snark.

You could also try paying attention to whats going on with this story...

Of course, if you did that, you may well not be quite as inclined to be snarky.

6. Some prefer willful ignorance and snark.
Of course, these same people tend to get quite upset when reality smacks them upside the head, as it usually does sooner or

later...

"these same people tend to get quite upset when reality smacks them upside the head, as it usually does sooner or later..."

I suspect we'll be seeing that quite soon.

5. They were not assault rifles
Edited on Fri Feb-11-11 11:05 PM by OneTenthofOnePercent
either the agents or the journalist made a mistake.
It would be pretty much impossible to straw purchase a title II "assault rifle" with all the permits/paperwork.

2. If I was B.P....
I'd be detaining me some ATF supervisors and leaving them hog-tied and naked on the steps of the nearest FBI or U.S. Marshall's office.

3. YES, and Grassley has the evidence.
Just follow the link there's LOTS of stuff there about this. Grassley looks to be declaring war on the ATF over this.

Senator Grassley Presses BATFE On Project Gunrunner

Friday, February 11, 2011

Pointing to documentation that guns used by Mexican nationals in a shootout with Border Patrol agents were allowed to be sold under suspicious circumstances with the knowledge of the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, U.S. Senator Charles Grassley (R-Iowa) is calling on the agency to fully respond to his inquiries into the case. Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry was killed in that encounter on Dec. 14 of last year.

Grassley has called the response of BATFE to his original letter on inquiry "little more than delay and denial."

Assistant Attorney General Ronald Weich responded to Grassley on Feb. 4 denying the allegations.

Senator Grassley on Feb. 9 wrote Attorney General Eric Holder to again request that BATFE cooperate with his investigation, writing "the Terry family deserves answers."

Grassley stated in the letter that he has documentation for his allegations. "The whistleblowers have expressed a desire to honor agent Terry's memory by disclosing this information. The Justice Department should work to do the same. The best way to honor his memory is to come clean."

I'd be willing to bet that some folks had a bad week over this, and would really like to see this all just go away.

The nra getting involved, is the icing on the cake, its bound to make some folks very unhappy.

9. facepalm
This whole this is a mess. It seems that with a regular civilian gets caught up in the webs they weave and killed its unfortunate. When someone in the LEO community goes down usually there is a huge outcry. They should start putting officials on the block. The ATF has a history of trampling about regardless of the blood spilled and they prove that yet again here. I would say Im amazed, but it is just another screw up with that group.
